Birdseed cakes
    #1574507 - 05/24/03 02:22 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

My cat finally managed to colonize two cakes, using parakeet seed. PES Amazons are the spores she used. The cakes have been in the terrerium for a about two weeks now. The terrarium is a plastic shoe box with perlite on the bottom. The cakes have goten fluffier and fluffier, but haven't pinned!

I told my cat that she should lower the humidity by shaking off the excess moisture on the lids, but that hasn't seemed to help. I am at a loss as to what to tell her?

Any advice?

Are you getting proper air exchange?
If not, this may be the cause as a CO2 buid-up may stall growth and pinning. Just fan regularly.

When I used terrariums, I used to place cakes on a wire rack above the perlite. This would allow humidity and constant air exchange. CO2 is a heavy gas and would not build up on a wire rack.

What was your temperature before and after birthing?
A drop in temperature signals pinning. I've noticed some strains will pin with a slight or no drop in temperature, but lowering temperature when pinning is always a good habit.

How much light are your cakes getting?
I just posted the results of a light experiment that may be of help to you. You may find it here.

Do you know your humidity level?
This is not of much importance in the innoculation jars, but becomes very important when birthing cakes.

Without proper humidity, the mycelium will harden and not allow proper pin growth. Maintain a high humidity and a fine occasional mist won't hurt.

Other than that, my only advice would be patience. It'll happen. If not, you'll learn. Either way, nothing was lost. I hope that helps.
