HELP PLEASE! Saving A Casing

Hello there... A friend of a friend doesnt have access to the internet and asked me to post a message for him. From what he told me, a friend of his gave him a started casing. He says the mycelium in the casing is from a "PF" spore syringe with "PF Strain." Apparently, he can no longer recieve this strain because the vendor shut down. He wants to preserve the strain for sentimental reasons or something like that. Anyhow....the casing he was given was pretty small by description. He says it is in a small, rectangular tupperware about three to four inches wide, five inches long, and approximatly two and one half inches deep. The casing was apparently made in a hurrey. He says the person who gave it to him crumbled a cake that had just finished a small first flush. He got some of the crumbled cake, perhaps maybe one fourth of it at best, and mixed it with three parts vermiculite and one part bird seed. All told, the depth of this mix is about 3/4 inch. On top of this is about another 1/2 to 3/4 inch layer of topsoil. It has been cased for about a week and there is definate mycelial growth. However, the bird seeds began to sprout and their roots are going all over the place in the casing...will this harm growth? Also, he said he smelled an odd odor which may or maynot be bacteria coming from the casing. He poured a good amount of H2O2 into the casing in hopes that it would help. Basically, there was not attention paid to the casing whatsoever. He just picked it up as a novalty and didnt even think it would work. THere was no attention being paid at all to contamination or anything when it was prepared. He figured it would die in a day or so but suprisingly there is noticiable growth. Anyhow, he was wondering if there was any way to save this casing. It doesnt seem to be thriving, allthough it is not dead. FOr most of the week he had it it was sealed, opened maybe once for gas exchange. Today he completely opened the lid and let it air out on his porch (weather is cool and moist here so he figured it may help. THe bottom line is that he wants at least one good mushroom from this casing to get a print from for future examination. Is there any way, given the above circumstances, to make this happen?? He was considereing getting some horse or cow dung (he lives close to a farm) and mixing the casing with that and putting it in the back yard. WOuld this benefit growth? Any help or information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Again, he is not trying to grow a bumper crop by any means...just one viable mushroom for spore purposes. Thank you for your time. Fluff Master

I've heard that bird seed sprouting will not harm the casing.

Coudln't you take some of the healthy mycelium and put it into another thingy and make it establish another network. Let some loser like Anno or something look into it. Be prepared to get flamed if you spell something wrong though.

I think it's actually spelled "loser" and you should really learn how to spell that one.

judging form the nature of your post.. ..i'd imagine the birdseed was not sterilized, and so concludes this casing is contaminated... although, it can/will fruit if givin the proper growth requirements... treat the casing as if it was a normal pf cake [mist/fan] and keep a light on it 24/7... dont eat anything that comes off this casing and print whatever pops up... ...keep in mind, contams can embed into spores... good luck.
