Recommend a PC?
    #15741139 - 01/31/12 12:57 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I'm thinking about getting this pressure cooker but I just wanted some opinions? It easy to use, anything special about it? There a better deal some where else?

Thanks

That is the one I use, except mine didn't come with a psi gauge.

I like presto. Many people here use the All American brand. I've never had one, but they look really nice.

I say buy the one you are looking at. The only thing I wish my had was the psi gauge.

That 23qt. Presto is also the one that I use.  And yes, many people on here use and recommend the All American brand over Presto, but the All American's are easily 2-3 times as expensive as an equally capable Presto.  They may well be worth it in terms of quality and durability, but even the Prestos aren't cheap as it is.

The Prestos like the one in your link work great so long as you take good care of them and make sure to NEVER let them run dry.  I accidentally let mine run dry once or twice, and now it is extremely warped on the bottom and a potential safety hazard.  Using a malfunctioning PC can be deadly, so I went ahead and purchased a brand new one just like it.  I'll invest in an All American one day, but I am very happy with my Prestos and plan to take much better care of this new one.

So, in short, go for it.  That's a decent price and using that model is easy as pie.  On a side note, if there's a Walmart near you you can probably have it shipped to the store for pickup, and save yourself the shipping fee.

How easy is it to run dry though? just didn't put in enough water at the start?

That's what I was going to do, site to store free shipping.

Thanks

Yeah I have that same exact one, I got it off of amazon with free shipping. It is a great pressure cooker for the the price

Oh yea, it did not occur to me when posting that I just bought the same model for a few buck less than Walmart's price, and I paid no shipping.  Amazon has it for about $80 here, and there is an option for free shipping.  It will take just a bit longer than usual shipping, but mine arrived in about a week so it was no biggie.

EDIT: And to answer your question, it's fairly easy to let run dry if you aren't paying attention to it.  It could also be said that only an idiot would let their PC run dry, and I would not argue lol.  I just so happened to be slightly intoxicated on those nights and I passed out on the couch while the PC was doing its thing.  You come to realize just how long 1-2 hours is when you're drunk and have to supervise some sort of lengthy, boring activity.

As long as you follow directions and don't pass out on the couch  you won't run it dry. I like to put a little extra water in my PC so that the jars are about 1/3-1/2 way submerged.

I also like to put extra water in mine but i find if the water is up to the jars i tend to get a lot more condensation between my poly-fill and tyvek barrier.  I just prop my bottom resting tray thing with spare lid rings, 2-3 layers worth, which gives me room to put extra water in with out submerging the jars.

Yeah I've got an All American. They are definitely more expensive and either brands works. Main thing is they both will keep the pressure at 15psi  The main difference is the AA's are really heavy duty and they come in several sizes so you can get ones with larger capacity, which is nice since a PC packed with grain jars takes so damn long to cool down.

I wrap the lids of my jars with tinfoil, really really tight. Never get extra water through my polyfil

I use SFDs and don't have to worry about foil or moisture on my lids :dancer:

You don't necessarily need 15psi when pressure cooking, because you can go with less pressure and just increase the amount of time you cook.  Just hit up google because there are plenty of PC psi/time charts available out there.

Yea, You can get 30-40+ quart capacity All American's, which would be much larger than the biggest Presto's that are out there.  And they are definitely worth it... but you're going to spend quite the pretty penny on one of those All American bad boys.

As for waiting for just PC'd jars to cool down, you can just get a pair of pressure cooker tongs that are used to pull hot jars out of the PC and use them (or some oven mitts, actually) to get the hot jars out of the PC.  You can then refill the PC with a whole new batch of jars and set the other ones aside to cool off.  Rinse and repeat.

Get that one. There is another one for about the same price on amazon without the gauge - it sucks. It works, but it lets all the steam out in one burst like once a minute - it's like a fucking steam whistle.

Glad we could help you.
Keep in mind the All American if you ever are looking for a more heavy duty PC, All American surely is the most heavy duty PC you will find.
