Millet jar nightmare
    #1574102 - 05/24/03 06:29 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Have 2 days ago inoc'd 20 jars with maz + cambodian 50/50 finchseed /vermiculite
I prepared the substrate by soaking the seed for 6 hrs in water that was mixed in boiling,
then mixing this with vermiculite that was watered to field capacity.
I pressure cooked for 1 hr, I also made a test jar that was not innoculated
When the test jar was cooled I opened it and the substrate seemed only slighly moist..How moist do spores need it to germinate and how moist does substrate need to be for healthy mycellium growth?
Are my jars fucked?
Shall I re-order my spores now

you soaked your seeds for  6 hours???
thats overkill IMO...i'd imagine your kernals have all busted
and turned into goo...i actually think becuz of that, it could actually be more harm than good as far as contams go...

next time, just boil/steep your seeds for 45 minutes or until kernals start to
rupture...remove from heat and drain well...
after that, add verm to the millet for correct moisture content...not too dry...but not too wet...also, to speed up colonization time, add a few spoonfuls of brf to the mix...(while keeping correct moisture in mind)
you want to pressure cook your substrate for no less than 90 minutes @15psi,
make sure you vent the steamcock for 5 minutes before you shut the valve...
commence timing once 15 psi has been reached and consistant.
after 90 minutes, turn the heat off and let it cool on its own before you remove the lid to the pc.
hope that helps

You should be fine....just allow them a little time...you may want to consider leaving out the vermiculite next go round...with whole grains it tends to be a little more problematic...of course this was just my own experience...

As Prisoner#1 pointed out there is no need to add verm to finch seed. The only thing I can advise you to do is just wait and see what happens. If worst comes to the worst and the spores don't germinate just pm me and I'll get some spores sent your way

Bi0

edit: have you got polyfill, tyvek or micropore tape filters on those jars ?
