Extra water if sterilizing casing?
    #1573823 - 05/24/03 02:18 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Should extra water be added if pressure-cooking casing in autoclave bags? Thinking of both a 50/50 coir verm casing and a peat/lime casing. Is there some moisture loss during the pc process? If so, how much extra water should be added?

Thanks

Should not be a problem.

Are you sealing the bag before or after or ever?

You can use paper clips on the folded up end of the bag.

casing material should be pasterized...not sterilized...

The bag is only folded closed in the pc and something is put on top to hold it in place.

I haven?t been able to get a definitive answer on needing to pasteurize or sterilize a casing. Reading this link http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23440 makes me think it may not make a difference so I though it wise to be on the safe side and sterilize.

May experiment and try pasteurizing one casing by just nuking it on high for 5 ? 10 minutes. Would this be sufficient to pasteurize it?

as taken from TMC pg. 129-130:
'the slection of specific microbial groups by mycelial metabolites is an excellent example of symbiosis. these same bacteria give the casing a natural resisitance to cometitors. In this respect, a sterilized casing lacks beneficial microorganisms and has little resistance to cantaminants'
'pasturation, a process whereby the moistened casing soil is
thoroughly steamed for 2 hours @160*F. An alternative method is to bake the moist soil in an oven for two hours at 160*F.

so theres your 'definative' answer on the subject.
as to the link you supplied...
Quote:

A pasteurization can be achieved by filling the moist material into a suitable microwave container with a cover and microwaved for 10 minutes at high and stirring it a few times during the microwaving to achieve an uniform heat distribution.

i object to this statment...
just because using a microwave worked for the user who created that tek,
doesnt mean its a sound way to pasterize...
...it worked for him...but it might not work for you is all im sayin.
goodluck in your experiments anyhow

I'm just a newB, but afoaf has done 2 casings, and he sterilized it for 45 min at 15 psi and after casing, it just took off. Colonized like crazy.

* pasteurization

It wasn?t "the user" who created the tek, but the info was compiled from many posts in this forum.
