Synthetic Filter Disk questions
    #15735460 - 01/29/12 08:08 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Up to now I've been using postal type tyvek that I get at Staples.

How many uses do you get typically from the filter disks?

How do you clean them?  By hand?  In dish soap?  In the dishwasher?

I have discs I have used 20+ times with no signs of wear or tare, I
also recall RR saying he has used the same discs for years when he was
still doing jars.

Between uses I soak in a 10% bleach solution before letting dry and using
on my next round of jars.

You can buy 100 discs from Fungi Perfecti for around $50 + shipping, not
a bad deal at all.

You can use SFD over and over. Im sure you just wash them off, the PC  will sterilize them when you PC your jars.

About a billion. I bought mine from FP back about, oh, 1985 or so (?) and I've only retired one of them due to wear that I recall.  It had gotten colonized heavily and in cleaning it it didn't really survive.

I just wash them with soap and dish sponge, then soak overnight in bleach solution to disinfect, dry in the oven on low.

I never clean as it is getting sterilized when I use it again. And I use over and over.

It's incredibly cheap. I got a about a 3 square foot sheet for less than two dollars at Joanne Fabric.

This is crap.. Pore size is like 40 microns lol... Miaswell just drill 1/16"th holes in your jar lids. lol

As for SFD, I cut into quarter size disks, And RTV them over a 1/4" hole in my jar lid. I only wash off the growth from the silicone seal on the lid, I dont actually wash the SFD as they are sterilized in the PC. I use the lids over and over, Never had a contam with SFD's and never thrown 1 out!.

As for easy felt, I had no success, And I threw them all out! lol

40 microns? Doubtful.

I like the way Barakanatan puts it:
Quote:

So polyfill is synthetic and you use it as a filter,
Does that make Easy Felt synthetic filter material?
When I cut it into disks would that make it a synthetic filter disk (SFD)?

:yesnod:

Your easy felt jar contamination was much more likely due to a problem elsewhere in your sterile process, and merely a coincidence that it was during the same time you were trying easy felt.

I prep all my grain the same. After pressure cooking it is taken out and placed in front of my flow hood to cool. I highly doubt contamination was my fault, as With the same technique using real fiberglass SFD's I had no contams. Using easy felt, I got contams after the jars were placed on he shelf to colonize. They did NOT contam if left in front of the flow hood, and contammed 2 days after being put on the shelf.

I will never use easy felt again. As for 40 microns, Hold your easy felt to the light. If you can see ANY light through the material then you have a MASSIVE pore size. Now do the same with a real SFD...

Let me put this in a more simple way. Would you make a flowhood with a cheap 15$ prefilter? And think it will work as good as your real HEPA filter that is guaranteed to filter down to .3microns with 99.97% efficiency?

And lastly in the world of mycology, One should aim for 100%, Nothing less. Easy felt is FAR from 100%...

Eh? The fibers are translucent, of course you'll see light through it. :oogle:

Whether or not it was your fault, that's a bummer you didn't have a good experience with it though.

Whatever works!

Dude, I have a spawn lab, And a particle counter... Particle counters are like 3,000$..(I can count the contams down to .3microns in a given location) And the issue isn't my grow area.. Oust?.. Its called a laminar flow hood bra.. Witch btw never shuts off...

Here are some jars with a real SFD. They have been sitting on this shelf for about a week or 2 now, Waiting to be used..(No Contams)

And Easy felt....

Yeah, I prep grain jars with the SFDs weeks ahead of use sometimes.  Contams are not an issue.
