you wont need to apply a casing when growing cubes, its really up to you i guess though.

cubes don't need a casing layer .You should get a few grows before attempting a casing layer.IMO its not necessary thou

I just bought a 9 liter bag of eco earth coir from my local pet store just google ones close to you and call them up, will save you travel. Also like previously said its common bedding for reptiles or large spiders in some cases. best of luck

O also the stuff pretty cheap if you were curious

Ya save that stuff in the bag for experimental casing layers later on.

Until then, hit up local petstores, look for 3 block packages of eco-earth, or plantation soil.

Around here they only have plantation soil... odd... I have a plantation I guess, bueno!

Also as this will be your first time using coir, note that 1 brick gets up to 10x larger than it is when you add water to it. You never really know quite how big it's going to get, especially if you start cutting them in half and stuff, it gets iffy.

Most Petsmarts don't carry eco earth in the store-online only.  You can order the 3 packs from Amazon for under $5 each.  As for the casing layer, although it isn't really needed I use straight oven baked verm, about a 1/16 inch layer after the tub has fully consolidated.  Cover with verm, mist the livin' hell outta it and put to fruit.  Usually inside a week the pinning begins.  The thin verm layer keeps your sub from looking like the surface of the moon whilst picking.  It does require a bit more cleaning of the bottoms which is easier once dried.  Just my 2 cents.

My pet store had some.

One thing im worried about is the monotub situation. I read a thread that a guy had side mush but nothing else.. Any preventitives for this? If its too hard to judge, you dont need to bother answering.
Thanks for everyones help and opinion!!!

Some recommend that you tape up the bottom of your FC to prevent light getting to the side of your substrate.  However, I have seen RogerRabbit state that it is the air and not the light and he has suggested as the substrate consolidates and shrinks, to fill in the edges of the tub with additional substrate to prevent air from getting down in there to stimiulate fruiting.  I have never done a tub so I can not vouch for which method works, but I do know enough to trust RR's word.

don't add anything to your sub as it shrinks, just dunk between flushes. thats normal side pinning is fine it won't hurt . the reason your tub shrinks is that the myc consumes the nutrients in your sub. buy a dark tub and cut out the top and make a clear lid  or tape up the sides .

As long as you don't use clear tubs, you usually don't need to tape it up unless you have it in direct lighting, which you shouldn't. I use the grey ones and pull a big black trashbag over them while they colonize as well as keeping it in a dark closet, which isn't necessity with the bag over it, thats just where I happen to keep them. As stated, side pinning isn't much of a problem, especially if you have proper lighting because they will reach up to the light anyway. Its only when you have inadequate lighting that they grow sideways inbetween the substrate and the inside of the tub.

Damn, i bought a clear one... You think if i tape it high enough it will be alright?
I'm just trying to get all the info i can before i venture into my first bulk.

Is there a way to give someone reputation points or something of that nature?

In that case, yes, I would tape them up, or your other option is to paint them. You could brush or spray on a good layer or 3 of black paint on the outside and that should do well, I've done it on my clear container plant cloners with no problems of algae growth.
