Mono Troubles.

Hey peeps. I have a question, I recently started a tribute project for "PF".
The project details: Substrate: 30%Verm/30%Coir/30%HPoo/10%Gypsum Tek/Style: Monotub Spawn Ratio: 1:4 Spawn Grain: Organic Rye Berries Species Used: "PF Classic" From the Prof's Personal Collection Spawn Time:12 Days(To full colonization) Elapsed Fruiting: 10 days Total Time: 22 Days Casing: NONE Fruiting Parameters: I have about 12 1/3" holes that I drilled out and lightly stuffed with poly-fil. The RH fluctuates in the mid-to-upper 90's. I fan every hour or two when I'm awake or around. I mist 3 times daily("FINE" mist, not directly) I have a light I have set on top for approx. 12 hours daily(CFL)
Question is, I haven't seen any fruits and I'm getting kind of worried, I'm no newb to the hobby. I just have never had it take this long before to pin. I also have never used a casing layer and get great results usually, I also have never used this species and can't find much info on it. Maybe someone can shed some light on this subject.

with mono's you dont want to be opening them up to fan or mist.

In the past, I always have. In fact I'm pretty sure most of the populous agrees that you should introduce quite a bit of FAE to any fruiting substrate. Even if that was the case, I don't see how either would be preventing the actual substrate from fruiting if it were fully colonized either way.
But, I am not myco-master so perhaps I may stand corrected.

you should get plenty of fae thru your polyfill, that is if they arent stuffed too tight. I would wait a little over 2-3 weeks after fruiting to get worried. 10 days isnt too long.

So 2-3 weeks is the max amount of time it should take for fruiting to occur? Its been a long time since I last tried my hand at the hobby, I just kind of did it as a tribute to the Professor. I just can't say I remember my tubs taking as long to fruit, but then again I have never worked with this strain either. Do you have personal experience with fruits taking longer than 10 days to appear?

If you are using MS it could also be genetics.

It is perfectly okay to fan and mist a mono, but most cultivators do it (fanning that is) around 3 times a day. That number is a generalization, its more of a rule of thumb kind of thing especially with the misting. Some monos don't need to be fanned depending on your set up. As for the fruting timing, as TH said it could be genetics especially when working with MS.

evaporation is #1 pinning trigger....mist lightly 1 time a day ... fan heavy 2-3 times a day then repeat, don't over mist ...you can't over fan....i never got pf classic to fruit ....1/3 holes?? should see pins in a week ...10 days, you should be close

What do you mean by you never got it to fruit? What kind of grow was it, was it something that could have been prevented?

I'm very doubtful of this. The culture is very strong as far as I can tell. Though it is MS, It came from some of Professor Fanaticus' own stock, from some of his best grows.
I don't know much about genetics, but it would seem highly unlikely that syringe from a viable grow would culture but not produce fruits..

Good list of stats on your tub.
I fan my monos all the time, but when I cant its cool cause they are monotubs.
I've had monos take up 3 weeks to get pins before, they'll come along.

i guess i cant say you dont need to fan and mist monos. like stated above it really depends on your setup. If polyfill if stuffed light and you have good air movement in the room you generally dont need to fan much if any. and any time a sub looks dry a good misting is in order. I think it may mostly be b/c of MS personally.

I would probably be getting worried too but it sounds like you're doing all you can. If you haven't noticed any odd smells or seen any odd growths I would just give it more time, maybe another week or even two.

So general census is I should just wait. Which I don't have a problem with I have patience, I'm just getting a bit worried because its taking a bit longer than usual. Please feel free to chime in with any other suggestions. I'll try to update if/when I get visual confirmation of any fruiting. Thanks Again.

I know how ya feel. I dropped some spores on 5 different petri dishes on the 14th. 3 i made some transfers from the other day since some mycelium finally grew enough. 2 of my dishes still just show a little black spec of spores... They just dont seem to want to germinate and colonize. MS can be VERY annoying at times.

Funny thing is I never have had any issue with MS grows, although I have never truly worked with a monoculture myself. I have worked with a close friend who went through the agar work to achieve a monoculture(before I ventured into mycology on my own), his total time was cut noticeably but fruits weren't much different. I also have never had a genetic spoil with any MS strain I've ever worked with thus far. It would really be a shame to see a tribute grow not fruit with the Professor's own strain. But, it would definitely encourage me to do a bit of agar work myself..

*UPDATE*
Hey guys, I looked into the tub this evening whilst fanning. I did some up close observation of the top layer of the substrate and noticed thousands of little knots the size of the ball in a ballpoint pen. I believe at least 80% of these are hyphal knots. The reason I think this, is because a handful have turned into what seems to be primordia. These knots are slightly more dark in color on the tips. No 100% confirmed pinning. So, hopefully I'll have a nice pinset in the next 2 days.
