What brands of calcium carbonate do you use?
    #15730383 - 01/28/12 05:51 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey everyone, I'm about to try for the first time the 50/50+ casing tek. All I was able to find lime/calcium carbonate-wise was this Espoma brand Organic Traditions Garden Lime. It says that it's safer than hydrated lime, but I was wondering, is this type of lime ok? I was hoping for calcium carbonate, but couldn't find any. Has anyone used this kind? and if so, how much do you use according to the amount of peat moss?

Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO3. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime. It is commonly used medicinally as a calcium supplement or as an antacid, but excessive consumption can be hazardous.  Ground limestone is almost almost pure calcium carbonate and comprises the largest % of all lime used in the United States - it is abundant and the cheapest form of lime. Also, it is not caustic or disagreeable to handle like burnt or hydrated lime. It may also contain varying amounts of magnesium carbonate. Limestones containing significant amounts of magnesium carbonate are called dolomitic limestones. Dolomitic limestone contains about equal parts of magnesium and calcium carbonate. Hydrated/slaked lime —
pound for pound is about 1-1/2 times more effective (at raising pH) and quicker to react than ground limestone (calcium carbonate).

If the Espoma brand Organic Traditions Garden Lime isn't too expensive, go with that, or try Pulverized Garden Lime

Awesome. Thank you so much for the reply and information! I bought the Espoma brand, since I live in the midwest and out of season, so Home Depot didn't have much gardening supplies and it's all they had. Now just have to figure out how much to put in!

Ok, so the Espoma brand says that it's a dolomitic lime. I remember reading somewhere that dolomitic limes should not be used. Is that true?

That is correct.

From the Wiki:

"Dolostone (dolomite rock) is composed predominantly of the mineral dolomite with a stoichiometric ratio of 50% or greater content of magnesium replacing calcium, often as a result of diagenesis. Limestone that is partially replaced by dolomite is referred to as dolomitic limestone, or in old U.S. geologic literature as magnesian limestone."

You want limestone that does not have so much magnesium.

Good luck,

JD
