Yeah thats what I was saying Gary Lincoff said, thats why I wanted RR's opinion on the subject.
-------------------- "While clinging to the moronic belief that they constitute a "counterculture," they share our society's overriding urge for expediency. They make no attempt to learn about the organisms they eat and it always struck me as ironic that people with such a low level of consciousness should be seeking "higher consciousness." -David Arora "Man is placed in the middle between two infinities - the infinitely great and the infinitely little - both of which are equally incomprehensible to him." -Pascal MyPostImage Gallery Trade ListSpores I Am Looking For Seeds I am Looking For Solanaceae, Amanitaceae

Getting back on the subject of growing though, the reasons I want to use the trays are: 1. for stackability 2. ease of handling 3. uniformity (I hoped) 4. and I like the look and yield of the vertical grow. This is P. Sajor Caju
First picture is fruited conventionally. Second picture was cased..I know it doesn't need casing but it's an experiment. Yield was 120 BE on the first flush, stems were succulent and delicious. The first one had little stem.
I'll continue making bags. I'll probably buy plastic trays in the end. I would hate that since these used styros are almost free. So I would try first cutting big holes in the styro for heat exchange and for the look-see. Then putting the plastic bag inside. Anything not right with that plan?

A frightening thought just occurred to me, with all these spores floating around my orchid media, is there a chance I would have oyster volunteers on my pots? It is made up of wood chips and coir. Although oysters everywhere would be great, it will be a logistical nightmare I imagine. Would mycellia be bad for the orchid roots. What are the scenarios I should expect?

I have had these growing in my vanilla orchid for a year or so now. I had it outside for the first few months then moved it into my indoor green house. Doesn't seem to harm the orchid, they seem to get along. Wouldn't rule out the possibility of a spore finding a home in a pot or two? I would love to find oysters in my next orchid, but thats just me.
Someone on the hunting and identifying part of the site identified it for me. Not poisonous but not very good to eat.
Sorry if that didnt help you much, just thought it was close to your concern.

Oh that's interesting. It would be great to harvest oysters from the orchids but my concern is that maybe a fully colonized pot will be difficult to water. Did you you dig to see the mycelia Chef?

No I have never dug around in the pot, just scrapped the bark back a few times when I first noticed it. They pop up every month or so, and the orchid is still growing strong. I am sensitive to the orchid when I touch it so I usually don't mess with I to much, but I'll put a glove on and poke around. If anything it may be helping the orchid break down nutrients and absorb water?

Oysters are good for your garden/plants stamets says.
Mycelium helps retain water in the ground like a sponge which in turn gives you nicer plants
He actually sells kits to inoculate your garden with. And he speaks endessly about this kind of thing in Mycelium Running.
Fungi are friends of plants And yes cheifin they will break down and recycle nutrients useable to the plant back into the soil

My bags are doing okay using the Indian calocybe indica straw tek but I'm still getting about 15% contamination. So what I'll be doing is to put the straw in the bag before steaming to minimize handling after it's pastuerized.
After it's cooled, I'll put the grain using this contraption. Any thoughts to improve on this?

An interesting approach that should have an advantage over top-spawning.
I will let those more experience with that species comment further.
Good luck,

Sparkle this is how I fruit oysters on my porch sometimes. I like to case too. It takes a few extra days but I do get a increase in yield with some strains.

Finally we're about ready to sell mushrooms! We've given mushrooms away left right and center and we've eaten so much till my family is sick of it for now. So what is the best cheap packaging? I'm thinking of square "paper plates" then wrapped in cling wrap. Does it need holes? How do you stop condensation on the inside so the customer gets to see what's inside? Does it need to go to the market everyday?

How often you deliver depends on how long the mush stay at top quality (chilled?, and how much your delivery costs are.
You will sell more with a more frequent delivery as stock is always there and better quality.
I use ventilated punnets for presentation, protection and price. Condensation clears up once the inside/outside temp/humidity equalises. Depending on what you are selling and how educated your market is you can sell loose as well. Search for fruit punnets
