Burnt syringe tip?

Complete noob here and first time dealing with spore syringes, and I thought an easy first way to use it would be with an agar culture I got from lab. I flamed sterilized the syringe tip to red hot but it turned black from the flame (I used a 7/11 lighter). I placed a drop in the petri dish and wiped the needle with a napkin and alcohol and got the black residue off of it, I'm assuming it's just carbon. Is this normal?

Yes, i've noticed that when i use a alcohol soaked cotton ball is pretty much cleans it, but i don't think it's a problem. also, you might be flaming the tip too much, you only need it to turn red for a few seconds, then let it air cool for a few seconds then use the alcohol soaked cotton ball.

Yeah seriously don't worry about it. If it can get the spores to the agar/substrate than it works fine!

Flaming the needle will leave a sooty residue on the needle, and possible discolor the needle from heat tempering, it is perfectly normal and will not affect spore viability.

It won't hurt anything but it's not that hard to make an alcohol lamp. Then you don't have to worry about holding the lighter and no more soot.

Thanks guys! So for inoculating something, would a viable procedure be wipe needle with alcohol -> flame sterilize -> wipe again -> and then inoculate?

I'd say flame sterilizing then wiping would be sterile.

I wouldn't wipe after you flame it. When it's glowing red hot you can be positive it's completely sterile. Wiping it with alcohol right after can't possibly make it any more sterile but will cool it down enough so contams landing on it won't be destroyed.

I dunno if this is helpful at al, but I flame sterilise my syringe ten cool it by slowly pushing the plunger and using the solution to cool the tip. the resulting steam that comes out I then direct over the inoculation point, in an attempt to further sterilise the silicon (after having rubbed it in alcohol)
anyone have ny thoughts on this as to whether it's helpful/ bullshit?
(p.s. anyone thinking I'm wasting spores, I'd say it was <0.05cc that gets steamed, you can't even see the plunger move

It's hard to say definitely what is actually helpful or not. I don't think there would be enough steam to have much effect. I figure if it's still glowing red the needle would be sterilizing the silicon on contact as it moves through.
Whatever works though. I'm clumsy enough that I somehow managed to light the alcohol soaked cotton on fire once so now I just avoid using it

hehe, yeah I figured it was much of a muchness, but like the steam shooting out
would silicone handle red hot needles ok then?

Yeah it's pretty heat resistant. Even the stuff that's not specifically high temp sealant should be able to handle it.
