Best way to deal with a stalled cake?
    #1571607 - 05/23/03 08:38 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have a cake that is about 92% of the way along. I forgot to inject spores into one hole, so it only had 3 inocultion sites. After 12 days, it's pretty far along, but there is still one little slice that is uncolonized. It has been like that for 3 days. I have flipped it and put a coffee filter on it. Should I just let it go? How long should I wait?

Thanks but no, I don't want to case it. I'm mostly asking what to do to get it to move along.

This used to happen to a friend of mine all the time. He always just took it out and tossed it in his grow chamber. The spot that wasn't colonized fills in by the next day. He's never had a problem with contams either. Just use your best judgement... if too much substrate is exposed your odds of getting contaminated are great. If it's just a little sliver of substrate exposed, chances are you'll be ok.

It could also be bacterial contamination. This causes the jars to simply stall, without any indication of what is actually wrong.

If you do decide to birth it, smell the jar. Sometimes the bacteria will only take over a small portion of the cake, whcih can be removed and then the cake can be fruited as normal. I've had a couple of jars in the past that got bacterial contamination at around 75% colonization (or so it seemed). When I birthed the cakes, the only viable mycelium that was found was a thin layer on the outside of the substrate. The entire middle was soft and mushy and all infested with bacteria. *chunk*

I had two cakes that stalled in my last batch. I just put them in a closet with a space heater and let it roll. Checked it in a week and viola! Rotating them towards your heat source seemded to help too.

My friend is growing my shrooms for me, since my parents said not to grow them in the house. And he has room mates, that don't like him too much, so he's going to grow them invitro. I'll just tell him to let them go for a week and check on em. Thanks guys.
