you guys obviously know jack shit about the dead, or their fans, or their concerts, or even any remote bit of their history; so why even post here? straight up noob ignorance

The Dead were always first and foremost about the music. Then the psychedelic experience came second, and from there, whatever else.

No? reallly?

cause im pretty sure the music was only a part of what the grateful dead were all about. it was a family and GD were their band.

GD channel on sirius/xm radio = :megusta:

i'd say my fav "songs" are when they do the song-ception thing and do a song-within-a-song-within-a-song, epic tunes there.

Im not sure how to post music. Listen to the dead from years 65/73. The pigpen years are the best in my opinion.

the scene is very much still alive. if you're able to hit up a Furthur or DSO show you won't regret it..

I'd recommend one of two starting points.

1.

A show they played in a small gymnasium on 11/04/77. One of my favorites.
In the matrix (which combines a recording from the audience perspective with a recording directly from their instruments/mic, i.e. a soundboard)...
You really get a sense of the intimateness of the setting but can still hear the instruments well.
Everyone is having a blast which is part of what a good Dead show is all about.

2.

If you can find it, "To Terrapin: May 28, 1977 Hartford, CT" (released as an official CD) is probably my favorite show from their epic May 1977 run.

P.S.

One of the cool things about the Dead is how they evolved over time.
You can listen to a show from '68 or '69, and they are very raw, psychedelic, and out there.
As you move into the early '70s, they get a little more jazzy. Then they go on hiatus from '74 to '76. etc. etc.
'74 was one of their best (if not their absolute best) year as a band.
