To deadheads: impress me

This is a band who were around for a number of years, with a lot of material. I like some of their songs but I've never honestly sat and listened to their whole catalog. I know there must be tons of deadheads on here.
I'm really intrigued by the fact that this band had such an epic fanatical following, maybe more so then any band ever. I mean, even The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, any of the biggest bands with the most fanatical fan base, I can't think of any bands that had such a devoted fan base to that had hoards of people who followed them on tour to every show.
I want to get more into the dead. As I said they have a lot of years worth of material, I'm asking all of you fanatics to post their most impressive material. I already like some of their songs I just haven't listened to a lot of it. Make me understand why people love them the way they do.

i'm not a deadhead by any means, though I do enjoy most of their music...
but I'm afraid what you're asking for isn't going to be achievable by listening to audio recordings. I feel like it's more of a "you had to have been there" kind of thing... the mindset, the drugs, etc.

GD sucked musically. They were basically just a traveling party.

Robert Hunter's lyrics were magical. Even the first song he wrote for the Dead (China Cat Sunflower) was composed on LSD. The band's music just gives me an "ancient" feeling, and the Deadheads I interact with usually give off a vibe of being old souls - while still acting like children at times, nonetheless!
The live shows actually sound like life. It meanders, has beautiful high points, but also includes some fuck-ups; it has dark parts, happy parts, and funny parts. It's like a micro-cosmic representation of the whole shit and shebang. Conversely, a lot of other performing acts (both new and old) don't let it flow. Even the improv sections feel rushed, like they're trying to prove something or get the sound out too quickly. It's just going through the motions. The Dead weren't afraid to experiment. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

ya I think music is a small part of the GD family. it was the acid and the mindset and basically like another poster said just a traveling party.
also they have some good studio recordings but the live music is where they shine. and not just listen to live recordings, actually being there.

I'd have to agree that Robert Hunter's lyrics are possibly my favorite part about the grateful dead. His lyrics just light my imagination up. Deeply enchanting stuff IMO. Especially on songs like Terrapin Station, Eyes of the World, Dire Wolf...the list goes one.
I was just jamming this one.

probably my all time favorite of hunter's work, based on a pretty well known old english folk tale, the Terrapin Station Suite-
-LADY WITH A FAN- Let my inspiration flow in token lines suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me till my tale is told and done
While the firelight's aglow strange shadows in the flames will grow till things we've never seen will seem familiar
Shadows of a sailor forming winds both foul and fair all swarm down in Carlisle he loved a lady many years ago
Here beside him stands a man a soldier by the looks of him who came through many fights but lost at love
While the storyteller speaks a door within the fire creaks suddenly flies open and a girl is standing there
Eyes alight with glowing hair all that fancy paints as fair she takes her fan and throws it in the lion's den
"Which of you to gain me, tell will risk uncertain pains of Hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance"
The sailor gave at least a try the soldier being much too wise strategy was his strength and not disaster
The sailor coming out again the lady fairly lept at him that's how it stands today you decide if he was wise
The storyteller makes no choice soon you will not hear his voice his job is to shed light and not to master
Since the end is never told we pay the teller off in gold in hopes he will come back but he cannot be bought or sold
-TERRAPIN STATION-
Inspiration, move me brightly light the song with sense and color, hold away despair More than this I will not ask faced with mysteries dark and vast statements just seem vain at last some rise, some fall, some climb to get to Terrapin Counting stars by candlelight all are dim but one is bright: the spiral light of Venus rising first and shining best, From the northwest corner of a brand-new crescent moon crickets and cicadas sing a rare and different tune Terrapin Station in the shadow of the moon Terrapin Station and I know we'll be there soon Terrapin - I can't figure out Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN
-AT A SIDING-
While you were gone these spaces filled with darkness The obvious was hidden With nothing to believe in the compass always points to Terrapin The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again For good or ill again

Their live stuff is definitely more interesting, this is my favorite track atm. They're also loads better if you listen to them on I feel like you almost have to be on it to really get the full feeling the music is suppose to give you. The vocals can be very disorienting the way the pitch and volume fluctuate. I didn't like GD the first few listens they sounded very bland to me, it just takes a while give them a few chances.
I recommend Dick's Picks vol 4. which you can get here it looks like.

EDIT: I didn't mean to double post if someone could delete the one above this that'd be great.

It's kind of like beer or something. The first time you taste beer when you are really young you think it taste shitty and you don't get why people would drink it. Then if you keep drinking it you realize its about something more than just the taste. haha
