To Dunk or Not To Dunk

That is my question...
Wheather tis nobler to suffer the ageing of time...
Than dunk, and be free from worry...
Ok, nuff of that...
I couldn't find any info in the faq about dunking, or at least I don't think I could... I just read in a post that it's a good idea to dunk before birthing, is this a good idea, and what does it do?
And could anyone create a suitible definition of dunking? just filling the jar the cake is still in with water over night?
Thanks again, I'm just full of questions today!

Roadkill taught me awhiile ago that injecting 10cc's of water into the cake after birth does the same thing as dunking. You risk less contams, and you have less wait. All you are doing is giving the cake a drink (rehydrating). Make sure your water is sterile.

Kewl! I can see where it would be a bit safer (using sterile water) and less time consuming! Also less stress on the l'il babies, I imagine... Thanx for the info!

For the injection tek is it better to make single 10 cc injection or make to 5 cc injections to spread the water out

From my experience I like dunking better. Contams havent ever happened to me from dunking... Its pretty safe if the cake is fully colonized, the mycellium usually fights off any germs pretty well. So I would advise dunking, throw them in the jar you birthed them from...set it in the fridge for aobut 20 hours but no more than 24 hours and take them out. The feel heavier, which is good

for this you really dont need to sterilize the water. Like Zwieback0 said, mycellium fights of bacteria very well. If your that cautious you can boil the water and let it cool before you dunk.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words. let me show you what dunking can do for you. here's the post from mycotopia where the details are given. By fahtphish (Fahtphish) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 05:06 am: Edit
my friend uses the inner res. tek. dunked before EVERY flush for 24 hours. he uses dry verm. to case and by the time pinning starts the casing is moist and if not one can just give it a good misting. he believes this may cut back on contam. risks due to stale water in the casings. other than that time he doesn't mist. they don't need it. they are sitting on 2.5 in. of perlite with a piece tin foil in between the cake and the perlite. these cakes are on their second flush. my friend said that the first flush, he couldn't even see the cakes. as you can see the bins are just inside of a clear plastic bag.
