This is pretty extensively covered in the FAQs and elsewhere in the forums (use the Search function above) ---
also, keep in mind that there's a drastic difference between dry and wet weights.

The www.erowid.org FAQ on shrooms has quite a good rough dosage guide for each type of mushroom. Has dosage in grams (dry/wet) and also how many average sized shrooms for a Light, Medium or Heavy trip.

all these replies surprise me. is everybody being sarcastic or what? the dosage calculator or whatever else there is in the faq will not predict the level you will reach. this depends on too many factors. 2 grams may kick your ass today, and the same dosage could have little effect in a month.

dont trip to reach a certain level (its only numbers anyway), trip and see where you end up.

I too am baffled by the dosage calculator, I would like too know who sat there and decided that there are 5 trip levels and how much you need to take to reach these threshholds. I know they are most likely "average" doses but in my opinion you cant really generalise trips in such a way. The intensity of a trip is a relative thing as someone may regard slight visual distortion as intense while others will regard complete ego-loss as intense. Intensity is a matter of opinion not a matter of fact...

Read the descriptions of each of the levels.

Level 1
This level produces a mild "stoning" effect, with some visual enhancement (i.e. brighter colours, etcetera). Some short term memory anomalies. Left/right brain communication changes causing music to sound "wider".

Level 2
Bright colors, and visuals (i.e. things start to move and breath), some 2 dimensional patterns become apparent upon shutting eyes. Confused or reminiscent thoughts. Change of short term memory leads to continual distractive thought patterns. Vast increase in creativity becomes apparent as the natural brain filter is bypassed.

Level 3
Very obvious visuals, everything looking curved and/or warped patterns and kaleidoscopes seen on walls, faces etc. Some mild hallucinations such as rivers flowing in wood grained or "mother of pearl" surfaces. Closed eye hallucinations become 3 dimensional. There is some confusion of the senses (i.e. seeing sounds as colors, etcetera). Time distortions and "moments of eternity".

Level 4
Strong hallucinations, i.e. objects morphing into other objects. Destruction or multiple splitting of the ego. (Things start talking to you, or you find that you are feeling contradictory things simultaneously). Some loss of reality. Time becomes meaningless. Out of body experiences and e.s.p. type phenomena. Blending of the senses.

Level 5
Total loss of visual connection with reality. The senses cease to function in the normal way. Total loss of ego. Merging with space, other objects, or the universe. The loss of reality becomes so severe that it defies explanation. The earlier levels are relatively easy to explain in terms of measureable changes in perception and thought patterns. This level is different in that the actual universe within which things are normally perceived, ceases to exist! Satori enlightenment (and other such labels).

I have to agree with Jeroen and Stonedphucker. I know the level you will reach depends on many factors. But i think the most important and predictable factor is the dosage. The calculator tries to "generalize" a shroom trip so newbies know that eating 5g will probably bring them too far. Below the dosage calculator the writer gives a warning:

"Okay, so that's it for the instructions, but there's one last thing I want to make clear: THIS CALCULATOR IS IN NO WAY INTENDED TO GIVE ABSOLUTELY DEFINITIVE ANSWERS! You can have two people identical in weight eat the same amount of mushrooms, and one will trip for hours and one will hardly feel a buzz. I think the values you get by using this calculator should be pretty accurate, since I've tweaked it pretty carefully, but you should really determine your dosage the old-fasioned way, by starting small and working your way up. If you don't want to waste the time or the shrooms on that, then BE CAREFUL with any value this calculator spits out."

I think it's better to have some information than no information about the dosage and possible effects as long as you know the effects are always unpredictable....

All I know is the dosage calculator has work out pretty well for me. I don't soley rely on it, but I use it to give me a ballpark figure. Then from there I usually add or subtract some weight. It hasn't misled me yet.

I disagree on that -
when I'm hitting a rave, it's much different than where I want to be when I'm chilling at home.
