What light will be better? (need advice)
    #15692619 - 01/20/12 12:21 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

For my 2 tubs electricity isn't an option to be run to the tubs for lighting, so instead I will have to use battery powered lights. I did some shopping and came up with these two options, what one will be more sufficient? I was thinking getting two packages of either one and but either (2 fluorescent lights per tub, or 1 LED light per tub). And I will make a waterproof container to be attached over these lights and onto the bottom of the lid.

Also I have rechargeable batteries available so the run time will not matter too much.

The bulb is F4T5, cool white light. Each run off of 4 AA batteries

This light has 18 LED's, and runs off of 3 AA batteries

Go with the fluorescent because it's labeled 'cool white'.  A lamp labeled a 'night light' is going to have a warm white color, whether LED or fluorescent.

If you can find the mini floros in the 6500K spectrum I'd use those.
If not, go w/ the LEDs.
Just put them on top  of your monotub or SGFC, not inside.
They won't get hot enough to damage the plastic.

Thanks for the responses, I will go with the fluorescent ones. So a cool white light is more leaning towards the 6500k spectrum?

@TL, my lids are not translucent so inside is the only option. I have some old shallow tupperware's laying around so was going to cut out the bottom and put a layer of clear wrap in its place, and then securing the tupperware to the top of the lid, providing the light with a waterproof chamber. I suppose the light inside would not give off enough heat to worry about it given that I provide at least a few inches of air space on all sides of the light.

The LEDs will definitely work.

Okay, well the  consensus so far is that both will work, if you had to pick one, which would it be?

Both are within a dollar of costing the same, and in the package I would get either 1 LED or 2 fluoro's. Would putting 1 fluoro on each side of the lid as opposed to the single LED in the middle be a better approach? LED's seem to put out more of a direct light as opposed to ambient light.

You want the most direct intense lighting you can get for fruiting.
That's why I use shop lights w/ 2 floros that are 4' & 1.5" in diameter for fruiting.

I suppose by 'consensus' you mean everyone but me?  I explained why that LED is not suitable, even though I use the correct spectrum LED light in my commercial mushroom farm.
