DO you need an impulse sealer to seal "presealable" autoclave bags?
    #15690852 - 01/20/12 12:13 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I ordered these here: http://www.mycopath.com/large-presealable-gusseted-spawn-bags-b-filter-p-35.html

and I am trying to figure out if "presealable" means that it has a closure mechanism of some kind, or if instead it requires an impulse sealer?

In any case, is there an easy way to seal this type of bag for spawn production without an impulse sealer? I saw roger flabbit using wire in his mushroom videos.

I'm going to be making spawn bags full of rye berries, injecting LC through the patch, and sealing with micropore tape, fyi.

Thanks!

Hey Captain,

"presealable" mean that the pore size on your bags is
sufficiently large so as to allow for them to be sealed
before they are PCed.

You got the .5 micron bags.

I expected "presealable" to mean the 5 micron bags, but
I know that the .2 micron bags ("T" filter) can explode
in the PC....I suppose the .5 micron bags do not.

Other then when you can seal them, the pore size can
effect what you use these bags for.  the smaller pore
sizes are recommended for spawn and subs that you want
to receive less GE.  For example, the larger pore size
bags can support fruiting in the bag better.

Good luck,

JD

I couldn't have gave a more complete answer then JD. Spot on. Although I have spawn bags, I personally have had better success with jars. Others almost exclusively use bags. They both work. One of these days I will give them a shot again. Jars are reusable, whereas bags aren't. But bags can also hold more spawn. Theres advantages to either, I say try them both and see what YOU are comfortable with.

:hatsoff: Thanks!

I prefer jars for spawn too.

I have a ton of spawn bags and have been consistently
successful working with sterilized substrates.

It is all good.

Take care,

JD
