East TN Can anyone ID this LBM?
    #15680149 - 01/17/12 08:09 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat: On roadside gravel (the grey gravel that's in the picture).  These were growing in clusters in a disturbed area where gravel had been laid down, they were comming up through the gravel, I don't know the nature of the substrait under the gravel, but because there were several fruitbodies of Pisolithus (an ectomycorrhizal associate) in the same gravel bed, I might not rule out ECM.
Spore print: Medium brown (maybe "raw sienna")
Spore morphology/Microscopic characters: Smooth, thick walled, pigmented, No Germ Pore, lots of "bowling pin shaped cystidia" (I think thats called fusiform)...spores were inamyloid:

Doesn't Tubaria furfuracea have a striate pileus and a bare stipe? I think these could be cortinarius, but I've been wrong quite a lot lately.

No, Gravija, I actually think Cortinarius is a better match than Tubaria.  Good call

It's a tubaria, probably not furfuracea, doesn't have the veil remnants around the edge of the cap.

I've yet to find tubaria irl. Am I way off, or does the general spore description for this genus seems similar to the genus cortinarius?

Its not Tubaria furfuracea for sure, the color is wrong, the edges are not striate, the spore print was darker than I've seen with furfuracea (it probably should have been described as a "cinnimon brown.") I had ruled out Cortinarius because spores were smooth (not roughened, no sign of ornamentation at 100X)... My initial feeling was that it was Tubaria, but deep red is an unusual color for Tubaria and the fusiform cystidia are not typical as well. I've long since got frustrated and thrown out the specimen, I will try again if I see better specimens this weekend. I appreciate everyone taking a look at it though   Thanks
