Whole Brow Rice Cakes? (WBR)

I've done a few "weird" searches these past few days on making cakes from anything but BRF/Verm. I came across a post where the person used only whole brown rice and said that colonization times were faster than regular BRF/Verm cakes.
I have tried finding more on using WBR but have found almost nothing and I wish i could have book marked the post because I cant find it anymore. His method was simple:
1) Cook rice as if you were going to eat it (obviously no additives, just brown rice) 2) Strain it and scoop it into jars 3) Pressure cook 4) Inoculate
He also mentioned that brown rice loses moisture faster than other grains do so 1 inoculation port would be optimal. I use 1 hole in the middle filled with polyfill (even when doing brf/verm cakes) as using this method doesnt require a dry verm layer on top AND (probably the most beneficial) is that you can squirt LC ALL around the jar which to me has proven to colonize up to 5 days faster (side by side comparison).
Any input? I am about to do 5 jars and see how it works out

I've done it multiple times with steam sterilization, all but the first went swimmingly I've done it using grain style and pf style jars with a verm barrier, with just rice and also rice in verm.
I recommend cooking them for just a little less than the instructions say, with a little less water. This gives them enough rigidity that they won't slime up. The pf style jars proved for me to be the best at retaining moisture.
If you have trouble keeping your moisture up you can mix verm with the rice, just like a regular pf jar.
The biggest thing you'll run into is yeast, which can be deterred by acidifying the rice a bit, which the mushrooms prefer and other contams hate anyway.
Hope that's helpful I'll follow that grow for sure.

thanks for your input, i have 5-1pt jars pressure cooking right now. I filled them like 3/5ths of the way. One thing that I forgot was to cover the lid with foil (first time that ive forgotten!!) so hopefully that doesnt become a problem. I will post pictures when I inoculate and colonization progress. I REALLY hope that not covering the lids with foil for pressure cooking doesnt become a problem, because thats my concern right now

Uh oh. Rice has always been so picky for me with moisture content, that sounds like a problem.

ahhhhhh! 29 minutes left on the PC. I will have to eye ball it and try to judge whether it looks too dry

that tek, with the whole rice is on the main page(instead of the forums), in the teks. I find whole rice gets too sticky to break up, in my experience with it

thanks, i will go check it out. I just opened the PC. The rice looks okay in moisture, I will be using 4ccs of LC per jar, so that will even boost it up a bit. i didnt fill the jars all the way so i could get faster colonization, hence decreasing the chances of drying out

Your concern would be them getting too wet unless your pc runs out of water. Without the foil there's little to keep the moisture that the cooker uses from getting inside of the jars. Let us know how they come out man, fingers crosses for you.

Well, after 2 days of inoculation (I waited 2 days to inoculate after i PC'd) I'm starting to see a little growth in 3 out of the 5 jars. It's very little so I didn't take pictures, but I will when there is significant growth. I believe 1 of the 5 jars might be a little too moist but time will tell. I will probably birth these as cakes and crumble them and use them as spawn, since like "SomeGuy" said, it is too sticky to break up. Updates and pics coming

7 days after inoculation:

All of them are very close to that one.. I'm finding whole brown rice to get colonized a lot more aggressively than ver/brf mix.. We'll see how the fruits compare. I'm thinking bigger/more fruits since this has A LOT more nutrients than a regular verm/brf cake would have.
