Paint Can Fruiting Chamber

Hey there, its been a while since I've posted anything. I'm going to start my first grow pretty soon here but I have a very limited space for this. The most efficient way would be to use paint cans, since they fit perfectly into the grow space. I was thinking I could put each colonized cake in a separate paint can. My question is: Does the metal affect the grow at all, like if it started to rust? And could this be prevented by putting some plastic on the inside of the paint can? Am I missing something blatantly obvious that will screw up my grow?
Thanks for the help!

Yes. The part about metal cans not admitting light. RR

They are the 1 gallon size. I guess i should have clarified: the top will also be a piece of plastic that I will open every now and then to air out and it will also let light in. What if I just bought empty paint cans like they sell at Lowes? Would that save me any trouble in having to use a sealant or anything?

I know it sounds kinda weird. But my grow space is very oddly shaped and it has a large space but has something blocking the entrance. I can slide a paint can right by it perfectly and fit 20-30 paint cans in this area. I've looked at my other options and this by far seems te best. Its hard to explain but if you saw the grow area you would understand.

They don't need to be sealed. In fact the small volume of the cans will probably cause CO2 to build up quickly so I can't imagine you would get very good results without adding some air holes.

So just poke air holes all around the container and I'll be good? Don't I need a cover on it to keep the humidity up?

put a few 1/4 inch holes in the can. like 8 of them. put some perlite in the very bottom of the can. take the perlite into consideration when drilling holes. put the cake in and forget about it. there will be plenty of light from the holes. leave the lid on.

The grow area is in a completely dark place though. So I will put a light next to it and let it seep in through the holes. Thanks for the help folks!

Use 3L soda bottles?... Regardless; drill 1/4in holes, every two inches, over the entire surface (including the bottom)... Then fill as full as you have room for, with wetted perlite; allowing just enough room for a fruited cake.

Not saying there arent already some good ideas here, this is just my two cents.
I saw somewhere a really good idea that I was going to use myself before I had my rubbermaid containers.
Go buy some shower caps, put them over top of dollar store plastic buckets, and drill holes near the bottom as needed.
Then to air out the Co2 you just need to pinch the top of the shower cap and move it up and down like a diaphram.
You could also maybe try this with your paint cans although I'm guessing the absence of a rim wouldn't allow the shower caps to stay in place unless you taped them or something...
Good luck!

must have light. you can pretty much use any kind of light. i've had good results with all types of light. 6500k is optimal though.
