lighting question

I was thinking today, about various fruiting chamber designs and ideas.
now I have read countless times that for fruiting use a 12/12 on off schedule. but correct me if I'm wrong but if light is needed for pin initiation and shrooms are phototropic. what difference would a no off 24 hour on schedule make if any? wouldn't it create more pins and healthier looking shrooms? and possibly could less light during pin set produce fewer pins resulting generally in larger although fewer shrooms?

There is something about the light, temperature and humidity fluctuations that stimulate heathy growth. When done right you get all that you can get

I have read something like that but I have also read that light triggers hormones that initiate the fruiting process, but I can't find anything on light time experimentation for mushrooms, good or bad. I have found plenty explaining proper sprctrum but that's it.

Evaporating moisture from the surface of the substrate is your number one pinning trigger.
Light is beneficial to mycelium at all stages of growth, as mushrooms have been shown to have a circadian rhythm, just like mammals. Mushrooms do grow more during the dark, but Light is essential for healthy strong growth.
You want your light to be as close as possible during fruiting on 12/12. & indirect 12/12 for colonization.

I was unaware they grew more as night. do you mean they should get a little light during jar colonization or case run?

I keep all of my colonizing jars, petris, bulk, etc. on a 12/12 timer w/ a 6500K bulb providing indirect lighting.
If this SOPA BS wasn't going on ATM, I'd post a picture, but IDK which one it is in my gallery that shows it.

logically what you say makes sense but I have had it pounded in my head "total darkness" is needed during colonization. in the wild total darkness is rare. you have really peaked my intrest I think I want to try that.

hmm.. this is very ineresting, usually use 2 rooms to ensure darkness and cover my heated tubs with a blanket that I don't like doing, I can just imagine all the spores stuck to that blanket that I'm fanning around the room everytime I move it.
I am going to look in to this more, I wonder If there is a more beneficial spectrum to use during colonization, kina like mary jane with blue and red spectrums

Yes 6200k works great. Stop covering your tubs with a blanket.

With very dim light they grow crazy thin and long with small caps. With very strong light they grow very short and fat. Use a daylight CCFL for best results 6 hrs on 18 hours off. If there is enough light to see in the tub you are fine. They just need light to set pins and know which way is UP.

yes, I plan to stop using it. I have an economy apartment and people stop over often, what I do isn't there buisness but I had to hide it kinda in plain sight made it less of an eyesore and It blicked out the light. I already have a new spot planned

12/12 is the best. Mushrooms have circadian rhythm.
For colonization, I use a desklamp w/ a 6500 bulb 12/12. For fruiting, I use a double 4' floro w/ 2 6500 bulbs 12/12.

why wouldn't you just use the search function on here? You can make it only link you to TCs or specific users. Besides, those posts may be old & shouldn't be logged by google. *One of the benefits of having a supporter account. You can make the original post you're making not be indexed by search engines/spiders.

have not even tried it. most forum searches are failtastic and I didn't realise how much it had actually been discussed here. I thought I had heard/read every idea as far as basic Mycology goes. now to find that something I thought was fact could be completely wrong... I'm still looking for controlled experiment results, not that I doubt you at all I just must know more

I've read posts by RR stating that his shiitake bags that received light during colonization colonized quicker & better than those that hadn't. IDK where the post is but if you UTSF on here, with a little digging, you'll find it.
there's tons of outdated bad information concerning growing mushrooms.

it was just an idea I had and couldn't find anything on it. now I know why, and I learned something I feel is more worthwhile in the process!
