just throw some water in the jars they came from, drop the cakes in, and throw it in the fridge for 12 or so hours.

say you have jars that are 100% colonized on the outside, then you wait 4-5 more days just to be sure the inside is done...THEN what do you do? i have read so many different things it gets confusing....
according the the teks and faqs...you should lower the temp and expose to some indirect light to initiate the growth of pins, (wait till you see the little primordia worms...) then birth.
OR
can you just fill the jars with water, then put in the fridge for 12+ hrs, then birth. does this step replace the above step? is this enough to initiate pinning?
OR
can you lower the temp, expose to light, get the primordia, THEN dunk and shock, THEN birth...or is the dunk/shock unnecessary once you have the little worms?
is dunking before the first birth a good way to go...or should you wait until a first flush before dunking? some teks dont mention dunking at all...just wondering what the best course of action is...in case someone else was wondering...

Should the water used to dunk be sterilized or can it just be spring water from a jug that you buy at the store. If it needs to be sterilized, how long should you boil it to ensure that it is sterile?

Don't dunk in peroxide, it will do more harm than good.
I would suggest opening up the jar, topping off with distilled/sterilized water, and place the jar in the fridge for 12-18 hrs.
The idea of cold shocking is in my opinion unessecary, but may help speed things up in some cases.

Just dunk in a 1 to 10 ratio H2O2 to H2O. The peroxide wont hurt the mycelium in that low of a concentration. The peroxide should break down into H2O and O2, all the while it protects from invading spores and the such.

The H2O2 hasn't seemed to damage anything IMO, but being a young shroomite my expertise is limited in the matter.

Joshua, you have had more experience in these areas than I have, but all I have noticed then using 1/10 peroxide is minimal bubbling, I've tried both and haven't noticed any difference between the two. From what I can see, I would assume that the H2O2 is breaking down the living myc. Let me know what the deal is.
And yeah, you don't need to dunk, but sumtimes it gives me a more even pinset.....

Dunking is good...in pure peroxide is not.
A 1:10 should be fine...if it is a %3 solution. I have used peroxide when I have dunked in the past.

Yes...I just saw a pic of someone with a cake in a plastic bag w/ water. I have filled a Rubbermaid w/ several cakes, filled w/ water and a glug of 3% peroxide, and put the lid on.

Yes, I plan on doing that if I make any more cake casings. My recent Brasilian 11-cake casing did not perform as well as I would have liked. I think that it was because the cakes started off too dehydrated.

I usually use horse manure compost and grain spawn. I like to do cakes every once in a while for variety though.
