I believe the tek adds it to the water so it has a chance to dissolve and gets more evenly absobed when poured intot he coir bucket. And yes, a cup is too much.  I believe about a table spoon or two is enough for one gallon of water.

The tek does not call for any gypsum to be added.
He states he doesn't use it, because he adds it to the grains.

I use 1/4 cup of gypsum per gallon of water.
Once the water gets decently hot (around 170F), I stir the water & dump in the gypsum.
Keep stirring until it's fully dissolved, then follow the normal steps per Damion5050's tek.

Huh.  I came to the same conclusion but didn't ask.  Somewhere around page 50 or so, someone recommended using about a cup of gypsum.  So, for my first 2 mono's, I used a cup each.  For the rye soak, I used about a tablespoon.  Either way, the cake performed very well.  Take that for what it's worth.  I'll research a bit more for my next mono.
