Side pinning in bad (and upside down pins)
#15680183 - 01/17/12 08:15 PM (12 years, 5 months ago) |

Some of my bags have formed pins, but almost entirely on the sides of the block in the bag. Im wondering if theres anything i can do to encourage growth on the top, and also if these pins will find their way to the top so that they can grow.
Also unfortunately i had to leave the light off for an entire weekend in my bags, as a result (i suspect) some pins see to be growing downwards, will they correct?
Any tips or insight is much appreciated.

Birth the block and put it in a SFC is one option.
How did you plan to fruit it?
The side pins may or may not find their way to the top but should be harvestable anyway, just not as nice.
In the future keep the bag tight against the sub and cover to prevent light on the sides to help prevent side pinning.

Hang the bags so the bag can't pull away from the substrate (creates a microclimate of sorts that is perfect for pins). Once it starts side pinning though it wont stop.

Thanks for the tips.
I plan on fruiting invitro.
I guess ill see how this flush plays out and then do what you suggested, probably hang the bags, for the next flush.
Next time im doing pf tek though, these bags are more hassle than i thought they would be.

Thanks. And I'm not sure. For the first flush I hadnt planned on it since I figure keeping it sealed contains the moisture well. For second flush the top will have been opened anyways

Your fruits will be more healthy if you give them better FAE while fruiting.
It will fruit in the bag but the fruits will be better with better FAE.

So you would suggest cutting slits? What about moisture?

How you provide it FAE is totally up to you and your situations Rh.
Slits are one way to do it. If your sub was properly hydrated and you manage the FAE (cubes don't "need" a lot of FAE) then you should be fine on moisture for the first flush at least. You could put it into a SGFC too.

Would you mind elaborating on this?
Thanks for the help, ill cut some slits in tomorrow.
Ill put some pictures up when i can as well, two of the bags have a ton of side pins some of which have grown rather big.
The other two (which i mixed at 75% or so coincidently) have few pins but i suspect they were less than 100% colonized when i introduced light. Maybe i made a mistake on those two.

The light is not the bigest trigger of pinning, so your fine there.
if you cut slits you will no longer be fruiting invitro. but don't let me confuse you
carry on.

You could just poke one or two holes and then a few times a day just deflate and inflate the bags a few times by pushing it down and pulling it up to exchange some air. This will keep most of the humidity in the bag. As I said your place is different than mine so you have to be the judge and sometime it's just a learning process. every failure is a lesson learned.
You'll do great. your almost there

Cheers man i appreciate your help. Thats a good idea.
Hanging isnt really possible so for the second flush im thinking ill use black tape on the side walls.
Also i noticed your link to cluster head aches, is that why (or one of the reasons aha) why you grow mushrooms? I think its absurd that psilocybin isnt legally available to people with cluster headaches and isnt researched more than it is.

I don't grow actives anymore, but yes I help a dear friend who suffers from CH. It sucks to say the least.
Happy to help bro.
Tape is not going to help you out that much with the side pinning. The idea of hanging might be a good one, plus for that.
Don't even worry about side pinning ATM. They are good to
To help stop the side pinning its best to keep the bag against the sub, it's when the bag pulls slightly away that causes a micro-climate that causes much of the pinning.
Light does help too, but not as much.

maybe i can tape it in such a way that the bag is tighter to the substrate
