PLEASE HELP, NOT SURE IF JARS ARE COLONIZED YET?????
    #15679864 - 01/17/12 07:09 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

hey guys, all my brf jars are at this point and i bought my substrate off a vendor, i think they put huge amount of dry substrate layers cause, its been a month and they all look like this, will they be ok to spawn in a few days cause i flipped them a week and half ago because someone said to and i almost feel like myc is starting to disapear. I dont know if that can happen but im wondering if these jars look about ready, im pretty sure the spots that arent colonized are dry verm layer but you be the judge, keep in mind all of the jars are at this state of colonization.

THE FIRST PICTURE IS THE JAR ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO RIGHT BEFORE I FLIPPED THEM------

THIS IS THE JAR AND ALL THE REST OF THE JARS ARE THE SAME AS OF A FEW MINUTES AGO----------

In your first pic you have tin foil over the top, is that how you had them?
If so they might have been starved.  Lack of GE?

Ya I was an idiot was scared of contams before I learned of the dry Verm barrier so I kept tinfoil on for awhile, I'm thinking the Verm is to dry up top and the myc just won't penetrate it do I'm going to wait the week and birth them. Does that sound like the best idea?

Having the foil on would help keep it from drying out but inhibit a good GE.
Fliping it over just causes the verm to shift and get moist.

From looking at it, it looks like it still has some way to go on top now.
It should be fine.  Some might put some micropore tape over the holes now as an extra precaution.  I'd just leave it be and see if it colonizes the top some more.  Give it some time.  If it looks like it's stalled completely then birth as usual.

Good luck.

It's just the dry verm shifting inside the jar and covering the colonized parts of the cake.  You have no worries.  The cake looks great.  What strain are you playing with?

And Rouge is right.  Keeping the foil on the jars will limit gas exchange(GE)  That will totally slow your growth.  The foil is used during sterilization.  It is placed on the lids to keep steam from condensing on your pressure cooker lid and then raining down water on the top of your lid.  If this happened your moisture content and your jars would be ruined. Just tape your holes with microspore tape and cover you lids with foil while sterilizing and then remove the foil to inoculate.  Once your jars have been nocD up keep the foil off.  The microspore tape and the dry verm layer is all the protection your jars will need from contaminants.
