Birdseed Spawn Question

I have been using rye grain for a while now, but I have been interseted in using birdseed simply because its much cheaper than rye grain. Is their a particular birdseed I should be using, or staying away from? How much differently is the birdseed compared to rye grain as far as cooking and shaking the jars up? A link to a really good birdseed prep tech would be much appreciated. TY

How did you prep your rye? Same process should be fine, just have to rinse it more. Some people will argue that you should remove "floaters" but some will tell you they're fine.

I rinse my rye, soak overnight, rinse, cook in big pot on stove, drain, then fill jars 3/4 full and pressure cook for 60 min.

It'll work fine with WBS. Tho, I'd skip the second rinse, esp if you used gypsum

I can tell when my rye has been cooked because the rye will inflate with water. How can I tell when the birdseed is cooked, will it inflate with water like the rye?

I never boiled my WBS, I switched to rye and haven't looked back, but I know that 5-10 min boil is standard for most grains and should be fine. It's not an exact science

I have a WBS question I might as well add here as I'm also interested in the difference between this and rye.
Is WBS in any way more prone to getting contams?

Standard answer: WBS is no more prone to contams that rye, if hydrated correctly. However, getting hydrating WBS correctly is more difficult than with rye.
Rye's a cinch: get it cheap and organic from azurestandard, same as RR.

Is there a reason that you prefer rye over wbs?

It is all personal preference as far as I can tell. Much of it will be based on how easy it is for you to get one vs the other and also cost. If you are going to be needing a lot of it, buying rye in bulk from a feed store may be your best bet. If you are a casual grower and a bag of birdseed every few months is enough, then go with the bird seed. I honestly have seen pics of enormous flushes from both and it will not effect the potency either way. My honest opinion is they both are the same, it just comes down to the skill of the grower for the size of the flush. I am still new so I am trying them all to see what works best for me.
