Light Cycle Question
    #15676922 - 01/17/12 06:54 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have a very simple question today. I'm sure it has been asked before, but I want a one time best answer.

In my closet, in addition to my fruiting chamber, I have a light with a 6500k bulb. The light is on the opposite end of the closet as the FC, as to provide "indirect light".

How long should I leave the light on per day and why? Please back up your answer with support. Otherwise, I'm just going to leave it on 24/7.

Why is 12/12 the best??? Someone back it up with support.

Because it comes closest to mimicking nature.  In addition, it's long been known that most growth occurs during the dark cycle.  Further, it's long been known that mycelium operates with a circadian rhythm just like mammals.  This is the reason for 12/12.

Indirect light does not mean having a fluorescent lamp across the room.  You should have the lamp within inches of the terrarium.  You also should not be growing in a closet.  Fresh air is both the number 1 pinning trigger and the number 1 contaminant prevention measure.

Damn it RR :shakingfist: beat me to the punch.

12/12 direct lighting for fruiting.
12/12 indirect lighting for colonization.
Mushrooms have a circadian rhythm, just like us.

Thank you Roger. I was not aware that most growth occurred in the dark cycle. I will do my best to imitate 12/12. I may be inconsistent by a few hours everyday because of my schedule, but I will come close. I will also move the lamp closer.

As for the closet, it's not like I have a choice. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, and I don't have much space. There's not a place, other than the medium-sized closet, where the FC wouldn't get in my way of everyday life. Also the windows in my apartment are not very big, so I think a closet with a light would work better.

I DO have a fan in my closet to help simulate fresh air as much as possible. Plus, I will sometimes leave the closet door open to get additional air.

You can get a cheap light timer just about anywhere.

Leave the door open for more, FAE for sure & the fan is def. a good idea.
Just don't have it pointing directly at the SGFC as it may dry out a bit.
