Jiffy Mix Survey
    #15676499 - 01/17/12 02:00 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Ive got some Pan Cambo trays that are almost ready to case. Been reading up on the casing layer, and decided to go with the "Jiffy Mix".

Im finding conflicting views on the proper preparation though. In your experience how do you prep your casing?
How do you prep your casing?
You may choose only one

For indoor cultivation, I case using RR's 50/50+ casing recipe and pasteurize.  Sterilizing casings is best utilized for long term storage of casing materials.  Immediately applying a casing cover that has been sterilized leaves a fresh substrate open to attack.  When sterilizing casing covers, even if you spike the PH with lime, once the PH begins to drop, it becomes open-season on the casing cover for what ever decides to land then, germinate upon it.

When using Jiffy Mix for indoor cultivation, first be sure the moisture content is correct before pasteurizing or sterilizing, letting cool then, applying.  Only apply and utilize Jiffy Mix as a casing cover right out of the bag on outdoor cultivation en devours.

That's a true statement.  At the time, personal preference dictated to just get a bag of lime, gypsum, peat moss, and vermiculite which, are kept constantly on hand and mix my own casing covers at will.  Now, I DON'T EVEN CASE CUBES AT ALL THESE DAYS.  Looks like it's going to take me a life time to work through this 3 cubic foot bag of peat moss.  If I ever end up using that entire bag, I'mma opt to buy the ready to use Jiffy Mix when I need to case.

QFT
Screw casing cubes.  Its an extra step and every step is just a chance for a contam to enter your project.

I use to sterilize my casings.  Now if I was going to case something I would pasteurize

Casing cubes. slows down evaporation of moisture from the substrate, affecting over-all biological efficiency, negatively.  This is why fruits are slower to form from cased cube. substrates and is furthermore, why I say cubes. FRUIT BETTER without a casing cover.  However, for the Pan. Cambo. specie featured in this thread, casing is pretty much a must.

Ok. Looks like pasteurization is the clear winner.

Also, I dont case cubes. But these are Pan Cambos, and will need the casing.

Thats a great thread. It really does a good job of documenting how fast this species is. I havent gotten them to fruit yet, but so far the speed at which they colonize is amazing.

I did G2G transfers, and had full colonization in all jars in 3-4 days. Much, much faster than cubes.

just verm sure = mineral

but once all the additives are added then pasteurization is a must.

Yea it would be awesome if I could go and and get it.  Straight verm works good IME.  Its only there to provide a micro climate and verm does that perfectly
