How do you keep the grains from sticking together?

I'm making WBS spawn, and when I open up the pressure cooker the thing looks like a giant frozen tamale in the center. I shake the hell out of it and maybe a few grains fall off. What makes the grains stick so tightly together and how do I break them apart? I inoculated it anyways, we'll see if it works or not...

You are washing your wbs VERY well before/after boiling right? Also add some gypsum to the mix, seems to help me out in that arena.

Rinse the shit outta your grains before your soak. Soak in water+gypsum for 18-24 hours. Boil for 30-60 seconds in the same water. Dump into your colander & toss the grains until the exterior is dry. Load jars & PC @ 15PSI for 90-120 minutes. When you take your cooled jars outta your PC, you should shake the jars before inoculation.
Don't wash grains after the soak. You'll wash all the gypsum off them.Quote:

www.mushroomvideos.com RR breaks it down for ya there. I do the same thing but w/ WBS. & for WBS only boil for 30-60 seconds. It's the finally hydration step & allows for the grains to steam dry.

I've never had success using Doc's WBS tek. Grains are always way too dry. I know others use it & like it. I stick to RR's method always, now & haven't had any problems, since.

I've have done about 10 jars of wbs and I never added the gypsum and they are always clumpy.
Last nite I did my first 2 pints of organic rye berries exactly like RR's video, to test an lc to see if it's good or not. I did add gypsum this time, and they came out beautiful, they just rolled around all loose after sterilization.
I don't know if it the was the gypsum or the rye berries or a combination of the two but it will be hard to go back to wbs.
Although to be fair, I will have to do wbs at least one more time with the gypsum, just to give it a fair shake.
