ok - i need to sterilize my casing mixture in some bags. I saw some ziplock oven bags for turkeys and such at the food store but don't know if that'll hold up in the pressure cooker. where can i get autoclavable bags????
thanks

They hold up.

Speaking of plastic in a pressure cooker, will a spore syringe (one from the Hawks Eye) that has been spent stand up in a pressure cooker or should it be sterilized by some other means? I'm pretty sure the metal needle will be ok in a PC but am not sure about the actual syringe and plunger. If someone knows about this, and the syringes melt in a PC, would microwaving the syringe and plunger for a set amount of time sterilize them proplerly?

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to sterilze the casing layer in a turkey bag? I've been having some contam problems recently, and I think that, well, this couldn't hurt Thanks for the 411

I don't see why you can't just put the ovenbag inside of and old pillow case like pcing the poo.
That should keep the plastic from acually comming in contact with the metal surface at all.

with an oven bag you can pc massive amounts substrate at a time.Let's say you have a pc that holds 7 Quart Jars but the actual interior volume of your pc is 11.5 or 12.75 quarts that increases the amount. Because only a very small part of it will be used for water and your pillow case.

How exactly would one go about sterilizing inside of a turkey bag? If the bag is sealed, that certaintly reduces the exposure to pressurized steam. Should the bag be left open?
Thanks Jr

Pressurized stem isn't what sterilizes. It's the increased heat that the pressurized steam creates that sterilizes. This means that steam need not come in direct contact with whatever in order to sterilize it....in fact it would drastically fuck everything up by adding more water to your substrate making it a goopy mess!!

Biohazard bags are autoclavable. You local hospital or university (bio dept) would have them.

Actually, it is a combination of pressure, heat, moisture and time that results in sterile conditions when using steam sterilization. You could have a low pressure system (boiling in an open pot) and have the water heated as high as it would go, and you wouldn't change a sterile indicators color. The combination of pressure (which allows the steam to superheat, that is, no disspate at a temp ranger higher than it's boiling point), heat (thermal degradation of biological entities), and moisture (ensures higher pressure, more permeation) that causes sterilization.
If I got a large turkey bag and filled it half way with substrate, then left the rest of it filled with air (like a balloon) and tied it off and pressure cooked it, the bag would explode. The only way I could see to make this work is to totally squeeze all of the air out. I am going to test this out some in the PC'er with some sterile integrators put in the load and i'll post my results.
Also, biohazard bags are autoclavable, but you'd be best to obtain autoclave bages. These are (usually) polymer on one side and paper on the other side. They can be autoclaved and ensure sterility of contents unless they are punctured (or become moist, so the "guarantee" wouldn't apply).
My experiment will involve mixing 1:1 peat:verm (the lime and stuff won't matter for this experiment). This is packed into a turkey bag half full, gently tamped but not "packed in". I'm going to leave the top open for the first one, with 3 sterile indicators mixed throughout so I can see what happens. 1 hour at 20psi is my usual sterilization time, i'll see if that works for this. If so, i'd say it would be an effective means of csaing layer sterilization. I've tried baking casing layers in a cake pan covered wit halum foil, I made the layer more moist than I would have to just case with, and I cooked it at 250degrees for 3 hours.
