electric pressure sterilizer help
    #15673401 - 01/16/12 12:00 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I'm just getting started growing mushrooms -- my first pf-tek grow is coming along nicely, so I'm gearing up for wbs.

I found a used pressure canner on craigslist, and when I went to pick it up it turned out to be an electric sterilizer that is missing the power cord and heater control bits.  The person selling it didn't know much about it.

It's clearly the same 25 quart pressure vessel as the All American 25X or 50X uses, but it's a bit different from their current versions.  From the mark on the bottom, I assume it was made in 1984.

I'm trying to figure out what was in the (missing) heater control box so I can get it up and running.  Their modern 25X has an immersion heater and a thermostatic switch that measures the temperature of the water inside the cooker.  The one I have is simpler -- the heater is completely outside the pot, just pressed against the bottom of the pot by the stand.  If you remove the stand and heater, it would make a nice stove-top pressure cooker.  I can't find any obvious place where a temperature sensor had been attached, though.  Did this unit have a simple control knob like a stovetop range?  Or was it always at full power?

I'd also like to know what the purpose of the needle valve on the lid is.  The lid has a gauge, a control valve, and a needle valve.  Most of the pressure cookers I've seen have a second control valve or an overpressure valve instead.  Is there any time I would want to use it?  Any reason I shouldn't replace it with something else that would function as a safety?

Thanks!
