I compost with red wigglers as well.  You could also use european night crawlers if you wanted bigger worms.  Google vermicomposting.

Night crawlers are not very good at recycling, red wigglers are what you want. Heres a link to a great place in the States to purchase everything you will ever need to be a worm farmer.

I just ordered an 1/8th of a pound of red california worms off of ebay. I've heard bad things about ordering worms from Jim's worms off of amazon, so it would be smart to check things out beforehand.

Anyhow, I'm going to have a little worm habitat, where I live. They're fun to watch. I do a lot of juicing, so they'll get nothing but the best organic, easy to eat fruits and vegetables.

I have purchased a few pounds of red wigglers from Jim's worms over the last couple years and they have all arrived alive and with free instructions. They have the cheapest price for red wigglers from a reputable company. I am curious as to what the issue was with the worms from Amazon? I recommend buying directly from their site to make sure you get the good service that Amazon cannot provide.

A big issue with vermicomposting worms is that if they're shipped during bad weather they will die en route. Jim's will make sure that weather conditions are within a strictly set temperature range that is biologically safe for the wigglers before shipping them out, adding to the quality of their services. They were featured on Oprah's show for a reason!

38 out of 140 people on Amazon gave a 1 out of 5 star rating to Jim's Worms, and it is Jim's Worms that sells on Amazon. The 1 star rating is for dead worms, such as this rating "This item is awful. Received a package containing at most 50 worms...no where close to 1000. Don't think 1 was even alive. Poor, poor quality. Item grossly mis-represented. Would encourage Amazon to stop selling product."

I was seriously put off by the ratings, there. Which is why I went to Ebay. I'm not sure what's going on, but all those bad reviews are suspicious, to say the least.

If it is eligible for amazon prime, it is sold and shipped by amazon. Jim's simply gives amazon the worms and then amazon ships out the worms for them, at a given price. Thats one of the benefits of being a business through amazon, because they will handle selling the goods for you. You just have to ship them items to keep them stocked.

I can honestly say that you SHOULDN'T buy Jims wigglers from Amazon, but rather, you should ALWAYS buy these wigglers from Jim's website directly.

Never had a problem buying directly from them.

Actually, that's not true. Jim's worms are shipped and sold by Jim's Worms, per amazon listing info, seen on the listing's page:
"Ships from and sold by Uncle Jim's Worm Farm," complete with a processing time from the seller (Jim's Worms), itself.

Alright, this is stupid. Look at this link to the first thing which comes up when you search "Jim's Worms" in Amazon. It clearly says sold and shipped by amazon. Since this is the first thing which appears when you type in Jim's worms, I assume most people will purchase from this link.

I have personally bought from the website, and not amazon, and PLUS they are reputable enough for Oprah to advertise for them. Not sure why you are doubting my credibility, or Oprah's, I obviously am promoting this product FROM JIM'S WEBSITE and not AMAZON anyway!

At any rate, we can at least agree that people are much better off purchasing worms from a source other than Amazon.

I order worms years ago.. i use a big rubbermaid container  to compost in.. U don't wanna throw anything really juicy in there.. I don't know what kind they r but they r small.. they eat newspaper fast and anything else.. I have froze them and drown them by accident and I still have worms in there. worms aren't picky.. good luck

But seriously, this guy has a pretty massive setup out in the scrubs of CA, and his worms survive  temperatures below zero? He says they never got lower than 45 in the bins, because they are partially underground. Pretty amazing actually.

a large container of oak leaves= some dirt+ a can of worms, chop the worms two or three times, triple them. make sure they don't sit in water=proper drainage, gravel at bottom of container.  astirr it once in a while it chopps the worms and aerates them. wait 3 month there be thousands...

Worms are not planarians.  Cutting them in half will kill or severely injure them.

Did that once:

a sealable container, dirt, some worms and a bit of bread/food every once in a while is all it really takes.. worked for me.

cought a bunch one rainy night and threw em in their... month later their were tons of babies and adults..

main thing is to make sure its completly sealed and the breathing holes need screens or else flys will lay their larva and things will go down hill fast

Actually both ends usually die, there's a chance the end with the heart will survive but it's really not that great considering you just sliced through major arteries in the worm, and its digestive tract, and other important things, like sex organs.

I compost with red wigglers as well.  There are actually a few different species of "red worm" that are used in composting.  There are some known problems with Uncle Jims worms.  He is often accused of not shipping the weight ordered.  People get 1/4 or 1/2 lb of worms instead of 1 lb.  Jim claims this is due to desiccation into the dry bedding during shipping, however other sources shipping the exact same way don't have this problem.  He is also accused of selling mixed batches of worms.  This is often a mix of Eisenia fetid (what most people are looking for) and Perionyx excavates ("blue worm").  Both of these species are suitable for composting, however the P. excavates can be finicky and like to escape the bin on occasion.  This also creates problems for someone who wants to sell extra stock of worm they pass this problem onto others.  There are other people (who actually are active on worm forums) who provide worms.  Try Bently at redwormcomposting.com.  This post was not meant to bash or boast worm retailers originally though.  If you have any questions please let me know.

Depends on the family and genus, African and European Nightcrawlers are top feeding composters and in the same genus as red wrigglers , whereas North American night crawlers are a different order of worm altogether and tend to be deep borrowers, more making intricate tunnels which water and organic material can flow into during rainstorms.  N.American Night crawlers will not survive in a typical worm bin.
