Hydrate the coir to about 80% moisture content. Ever heard of field capacity? By clicking the link provided you will be taught briefly what and how, to achieve proper moisture content of bulk substrate materials such as coir and manure.

Judging proper field capacity can be difficult for new growers, that's why we recommend "bricks" of coir because about 4 quarts of water is always the right amount.
Try using what you got if you're confident, who knows you might pick-it-up quickly. If you have too much trouble though and can't get the water content right, then switch to bricks. Here is the best price on coco coir bricks I have found.

Just my personal opinion, but I think you get a better bang for your buck with the bricks, at least at my local pet store. That 8 quart bag costs as much as a 3 pack of bricks and you get way more from the bricks after hydration.

To say that using bricked coir would be cheaper than bagged coir makes more sense then to come out and merely state to "not use bagged coir". Seems as if you're implicating that bagged coir won't work.

i see how that can be interpreted and i totally didnt mean it that way.
but using bagged coir is more expensive and harder to get proper moisture.
and if they have bagged coir they have bricked coir.

Actually they were out of stock, or I would have got bricks like I usually do. Also, yes I know how to judge field capacity. I just figured the shroomery would have had a hydration/pasteurization recipe for loose coir by now.

Order online bro. Glad you know how to judge field capacity, I look forward to seeing your grow when you get fruits!
You're totally right man, why don't we? How about you be the first one to post a tek on using loose coir. I'm sure you would get some props. Look on the bag for instructions, they might mention like a certain amount of water per weight unit of coir.

Hamloaf and k00laid are spot on: the bricks rock and field capacity is what you want.
I need to add that what you show in the picture is not just non-bricked coir, but that it is the wrong type all together. What you show there is "fibers". You want the ground material.
Good luck,
JD

I tried it first, and failed, but succeeded later with the standard bricks of coir.
It is entirely likely that I was just ignorant at the time.
...but I will not buy the loose fibers again.
My $0.02.

I used a brick of eco earth, with a recent grow, that worked great, supposably its the same substrate according to petco employee's (not really saying much) but I guess I'll start a mini mono grow with the loose sub as an experiment and if I get good results I'll post a tek. But in the meen time I'm going back to bricked Tropical soil.

Using a ratio of 1:3+, coir:water, will bring you a little shy of field capacity... I do 1:3 for my coir and 1:2 for my vermiculite (all by weight)... Once ready to fruit, I give them a dunk and then place in fruiting conditions
Example: 100g coir hydrated with 300+ml of water
