You're right, it is called uploading
We don't know if the conciousness goes inside the computer or not, this idea is still theoretical. I don't really want a copy of me inside a computer, nor did I suggest I did-but I'd be willing to give it a shot when I'm 90, have nothing else to live for and can possibly benefit science with my contribution.

There are people who appear to be in a coma, but are fully concscious. They've just lost all motor ability. Theres an experimental device designed for these people, a series of electrodes are implanted in the brain, and they can make their wheelchair move by thinking about it. I don't think they can navigate though. Still, thats converting a biological impulse into data, which is the first crucial step. Thats a frequent dream of mine, probably many, while tripping... "if only I could record what i'm seeing right now!!"

There's a lot of "brains just work with electricity so why can't you just read it" style comments going on. Well, while neurons communicate with each other with electric signals, in all honesty doctors dont really have a clue how the mind works. Sorry doctors.

The question was whether or not the machine was impossible.  Just because medicine doesn't understand how the brain works yet, doens't mean that it has been proven impossible to record thought.  The machine is logically possible.

I'm quitting cigarettes and can't fucking sleep so perhaps this will interest at least some of you.

"The Fantastic Inventions of Nikola Tesla" copyright 1993 by Adventures Unlimited Press, pp276-277

Tesla's "Thought Photography Machine"

This was perhaps Nikola Tesla's most fantastic invention, a device for photographing thought. Tesla once said in 1933, when 78 years old, "I expect to photograph thoughts... In 1893, while engaged in certain investigations, I became convinced that a definite image formed in thought, must by reflex action, produce a corresponding image on the retina, which might be read by a suitable apparatus. This brought me to my system of television that I had announced at that time... My idea was to employ an artificial retina receiving an object of the image seen, an optic nerve and another retina at the place of reproduction... both being fashioned somewhat like a checkerboard, with the optic nerve being part of earth". Tesla made his transition before revealing too many details of his invention. The above were taken from a newspaper interview that was released to wire services on September 10, 1933.

The suggestion that the mind is connected to the brain but not actually controlled by it sounds very spiritual, but I believe philosophers are pretty much 50/50 split on the issue.

I agree with everything you said (though of course, I don't know the specific for who believes in Cartesian dualism or not).

I think Phencyclidine makes a good point, but maybe the spirit is just another thing we've yet to understand. Perhaps it's not as mystic as we might think, maybe it too is constructed of electricity, maybe we can capture the soul, conciousness, and thought in a machine. We have no way of knowing right now.
