Is such a Machine Impossible?
    #1567183 - 05/21/03 10:04 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Would it be impossible to make a device that records inner audio(sound)
and video (sight) and makes it viewable on a screen?

If you see it in your mind isn't your brain seeing and/or producing it?
Would this not mean that it would almost be like a file, that it is obtainable?

Imagine using such a device to view your dreams, and trips.

rofl certainly not yet dude...

the closest thing are those diodes they can stick on your head that can get certain readings but its nothing like what you're talking about

Watch this...

Strange Days

it was made in 95 and though it is supposed to take place in 99, there still aren't any "s.q.u.i.d. receptors" yet. But hey at least they got the widescreen tvs right.

actually, this may be possible in the relatively near future. fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a technique they can use to actually monitor what parts of your brain are active when you're performing a task - like talking, addition, etc. If the resolution of this and other techniques can be improved, we could actually watch the brain in detail and real-time as it thinks.

that would suck

I remember seeing a device that enable the blind to see by sending visual data directly to the occipital lobe. They saw in shitty black and white grainy video, but it was enough to be able to drive a car in a parking lot. Perhaps one can get the data from the occipital nerve and convert that to video and capture it. As for hallucinations and pseudo-hallucinations, I don't know how you would capture that, not sure if it originates in the nerve or lobe....

I dont think our mind thinks in actual film, sure you can think visually, but not so far as an actual thing that can be turned into actual film.

i think it will be posible in the neer future
bec ur brain uses electrical signals just like a comp.
it would be like conecting 1 comp to another
like the internet that would be awesome

basically all you have to do is replace the electronic device concept with some kind of device that , although real, only exists in your head.

yeah ive read about that too, so no it wouldnt be impossible, but with current technology, the resulting imagery would be unneringly poor. but were moving along here with leaps and bounds baby!

only problem is they have to implant electrodes into the brains visual cortex, and youd have to carry around a camera headset which in turn is connected to a laptop which processes the electrical impulses created by your brain into a grainy "dot here dot there" image......is it worth it?

i say no.....id rather just enjoy my trip....i dont care if anyone else wants to see what im seeing.....:)

does make some interesting reading tho people - blind people can ACTUALLY be made to see nowadays - pretty amazing stuff.

IN theory, yes, it is possible.  Relatively recently -- last year or so -- they actually wired up a cat so that they could get a video signal from its brain of what it was seeing.  I'm not searching for that -- you do the googling yourself.

You could easily produce a ghetto version of one of these "machines" by taping a video camera to your head where the flip screen in in sight. lol

I didn't read through this whole thread because I'm sure it's filled with a lot of "you're a retard" remarks or such-from the first response to the original post I'm just making an assumption and not wasting my precious time (I really have no life but like to pretend I do) to read them all. There is a man, who, before the Matrix ever came out was developing ways to live inside a computer. I saw a 20/20 special on it. I'm not saying since 20/20 reported it it means it's absolutely going to happen, but there has to be some basis if a network as large as ABC is willing to broadcast this man's idea across the nation. He was going to use nanotechnology that would scan the brain and body pretty much, microcomputers smaller then a red blood cell. They would scan everything in the brain, and upload it to computer. Of course there is much more to it then that. But that's all they said sort of as in a "nut shell". So I think this is very possible. After all, thoughts and visions are just electronic particles being sent back and forth. If our machines can read data because of the same principle, it only makes sense.

There's a lot of "brains just work with electricity so why can't you just read it" style comments going on. Well, while neurons communicate with each other with electric signals, in all honesty doctors dont really have a clue how the mind works. Sorry doctors.

I also seriously doubt thought is something that could be shown on a television.

Not just neurons communicate with electric signals, our tendons do, our muscles do, etc. etc. Signals sent from the brain make muscles contract-that's utilizing electric signals. I doubt thought could be shown on a television at this day in age, I don't believe it's impossilbe though.

MrSleep, I believe it's called uploading. I always thought it was a bit of an odd idea - even assuming it's possible to do, it doesn't really benefit anyone, if you think about it:

You scan your brain, upload it into a computer, and then what? You're still walking around normally, your consciousness doesn't go inside the computer somehow. You're still as mortal as before (I've seen people suggest it as a way of living forever). Do you really want a copy of you inside a computer?

Surely it will become your nemesis and plot your demise.
