how long before crumble/case after colonized?
    #1566380 - 05/21/03 03:11 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

My neighbor's cousin's neigbor said that the visible portion of the substrate inside all of his glass jars (ie. surface area) is right at 100% colonized. He is very happy with this since this is his first time. Should he wait a few days before crumbling and casing or should he just case the cakes whole?

I think he is afraid that an inner portion of the cakes might be uncolonized when he decides to crumble. Don't know what kind of mushrooms they are - I think he said they might be a Cambodian strain of Portobella.

Waiting a couple a' days won't hurt, though if it truely looks 100% colonized, I wouldn't worry bout' it. My buddy says that casing cakes whole works well, but he prefers grating them since they're hard to crumble into the desired size.

a cheese grater is a great idea. but dunk your cakes after they are 100% colonized before you case them, or you could dunk after the casing colonizes. just turn the jar upside down, to loosen from the cake from the edges of the glass, then turn back upright, take off the lid, pour bottled water or even tap water into the jar, fill to the top, then put the lid back on and set in the refridgerator overnight. drain and birth in the moring, or case as desired.

btw, how many days since innoculation? this can give you a good idea too of when the time is right. My friend CatDog have BRF jars that have been colonizing for 21 days. they are at about 100%, but he is waiting two more days with the jars upside down, hoping that he doenst get any overlay. then he'll dunk and case half and birth as cakes for the other half.

Once you case you don?t need to leave them in the container and miss out on the side shrooms.

There are people that grow edible mushrooms, and infact many exotic edible strains are worth ALOT more than psilocybe mushrooms. Why do people grow vegetables? Why do people grow fruit? Why do people raise cattle? Because it can bring them satisfaction, they can know what their eating was grown by them and is completley organic, they know exactly what theyre eating, they enjoy it as a hobby....and the list goes on...

13 days only since innoculated (78 - 80 degrees); he started seeing signs of germination after 3 days; 30% colonized 3 days after that; and surface area 100% 7 days after that. He used a little more than 1 cc per 1/2 pint jar. He thinks that those Crazy Cambodian Portobellas are really living up to their reputation for fast colonizers.

Question:::: So if the surface area is 100% colonized; that means that inside the cakes is also 100% colonized? Maybe he'll just case them whole to ease his concerns...

Many thanks for all the replies!!
