Air Tight Terrarium?
    #1566946 - 05/21/03 08:47 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I just started testing my terrarium, I don't have a camera to show you guys, but it's a 10 gal aquarium with a lid and 2 25watt blue lights, there are a few tiny holes in places and where the air pump tubes go in there is some space air can get in too.

How "secure" should my terrarium be?  If it isn't that secure, would spraying it with h2o2 every few days make it better?

Thanks, I'm using one of the terrarium setups from the faq.

Sko

PS:  2 of my jars are almost 100% *yay* for me.

PPS:  just innoculated 4 half-pints of popcorn with EQ  *yippee* for me!  lol

I would suggest (and I know some are going to go wild over this but..)  I suggest using perlite and water, and don't spray.  Simply fan 2-3 times a day, and make sure you keep your perlite moist.

When you spray, even with a drip shield, you can "seal" the mycelium on the cakes.  I started a post concerning sealing.  Point is, you should be fine either way   AFOAF has just found that her cake seem to produce better and healthier yeilds when the cakes are not sprayed.

Just my 2 cents

Lana

ooo, take a pic of your setup when you can, i plan on using the same thing. aquarium with blue light and airpump + fanning + misting with casing + perlite if its still not enough humidity

Why haven't any of you answered my question?

Does my terrarium need to be air tight, I don't plan on spraying, I was just asking if I should, now I know I just won't spray.

Does my terrarium need to be air tight so contams don't get in or will it work without being so secure?

Thats what i've used, and its great!...unless you have a multi shelf terrarium, in which case a humidifier would come in handy.

I always use peroxide with the water in the perlite, as i believe this helps reduce the chances of contam.

I find air tight terrariums get contams easier. It is good to have the lid on loose, or a couple holes in the bottom, as this will not effect humidity much, and it will keep the air from becoming stale.

Thank you for finally answering my question, I got a coffe filter over the biggest hole, and other than that it's pretty tight, I also use an air pump.

Your awsome!
