Humid enough?
    #1566841 - 05/21/03 07:57 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Hi. I have one cake in a foot high pot with about 1 and a half inch layer of wet vermiculite on the bottom. The pot is ceramic it is 10 inches wide at the top and 7 at the bottom. The sides of the pot don't have droplets of water...is this still humid enough? I got one half centimeter pre-shroom and white fuzz growing on it. So it seems to be growing but would putting another inch or so of wet vermiculite make it fruit faster? I also use a weak fluorescent 2 hours or so a day...does this sound ok?

Ok I replaced the vermiculite with about an inch and a half or two of wet Perlite. I have the light on right now. I also have a shopping jewel bag over the pot tied with a shoelace. it isnt seethrough it is a faint white. Is this good enough for the light to penetrate through? Or should I replace that with a totally translucent material? And how long should my light be on a day? It's a 15 watt fluorescent fishtank light. Please help and I'll keep you posted.

It'll work fine as long as it lets light through.

How wet should the perlite be and how often should I re-soak it?

Ok I think I fixed my problem. I put the cake in an 8 inch wide by 10 inch high cylinder pot and put about 1 - 1/2 to 2 inches of fairly moist/wet perlite and rapped the jewel bag all the way around so its sealed. I put it under my cabinet near the floor. Originally it was in my closet. I'm checking the temp of the closet and cabinet right now to see which one keeps cooler. This is about 2-3 times smaller than the other pot. Oh and the other pot had a drain-hole and tray and maybe that was why it wasn't humid enough...so yeah I'll update for the sake of other beginners looking for answers. Thanks for the answers and opinions so far.
