Rapid colonization
    #15663948 - 01/14/12 04:36 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I know none of these are pinning or even showing hyphal knots. But it took less than a week for these to fully colonize. My tubs usually take about 3 weeks before full colonization, or at least signs of fruit bodies. I'm pretty positive I should give them some more time to consolidate but just wondering if any experienced cultivators think otherwise or have some tips. Should I initiate pinning? I always use 5050 cocoa verm tek, with awesome success. Except this time I didn't add a layer of non-spawn mixed substrate to the top. Was wondering if that could be an issue, or if I could add it now for a better pin set/raised humidity. Feedback fuckers!

Here's a few of the tubs:

I think this one  in particular looks beautiful

IME a healthy substrate and spawn will visually colonize in 7-10 days.
Wait to see 4-6 pins before fruiting for an optimal first flush, usually takes another 7-10 days

That's bacteria.  Toss.  If that's what you used to inoculate the trays, they're toast too.

No, those aren't the ones used on the tubs. I really trust RR's opinion, but upon inspection I can see  white rhizomorphic growth and have done this same process dozens of times. I really don't think they're contaminated since they resemble all my other successfully colonized grain, but what makes you say contamination?

Also, if I let them mature, wouldn't a funky smell be the dead give away or do some contaminates mimic, in a sense, mycelium to where it's practically undetectable to the untrained eye? Or idk lay dormant and pop up later kinda like mush herpes?

This might be a sign. Usually 3 weeks, now 1 week, what gives. If you are consistent, and it sounds like you are, then your results usally will be. Not that far off. I do believe trich starts off white, then turns green. Im not sure though, haven't experienced it on brf cakes, but that's what I've read.

I mean I can clearly see rhizomorphic growth, and no discoloration other than the uncolonized grain, and the transparent colors slightly visible of the colonized grain. But, I cant really afford to doubt RR.

Well, I slightly modified my tek.. Very slightly. I now keep a well maintained temperature, and this time I didn't add a layer of pure verm/coir to the top. I'm begining to think this is just something I'll have to let play out (like everytime I try a new tek or tweek a method).

Anyone else support this trich possibility??

I didn't say trich, I said bacteria.  Bacteria will often weaken the mycelium enough to let trich take over, but the problem here is bacteria contamination.

Na, I don't remove floating husks, seeds, or any of that. Done it plenty of times. It does look greenish, gave me a scare the first time I came across it, but when thoroughly introspected in person its more greyish (the husk is already brownish grey and the light myc colonization gives it a slightly green look on the camera I guess) cause the myc don't colonize it very thoroughly my guess is the nutrients from the grain have soaked into the little fucker.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how can you identify the bacterial infection? Or do you know of a link explaining such. The search engine kept pulling up non relevant information.

Looks a little wet or something.

I leave all the floaters, etc. in my wbs. I also find that those dark husks look a little green when the myc first crawls over it.

Yeh.. my colonized grain always seems to be wet no matter how hard I try, but has fast colonization times and great yields, so I'm not complaining.

They'll probably full colonized by tomorrow, and I'll let em consolidate for a few days. Maybe I should set this as a grow log of some sort if it turns out successful; if it goes wrong, just a lesson to beginners. Not that I'm an expert or anything.

Best way to check a fully colonized jar is to break it up, open it, and smell it before you dump it into your substrate.
If it smells like mushrooms, you're good.
If it smells like anything else (key smells are subtle, but usually it will have a sour or dirt-like aroma that overpowers the mushroom smell), toss the jar.  Don't risk it.

Agreed completely, even with the slight uncol-onized comment (but if it works for you then, don't let others discourage or dog on you for a method proven effective by continuously. I've learned not everyone has equal success with allot of the same methods... possibly due to key steps neglected. Trial and error baby and overall patience) My first move before spawn to bulk is always to take a good whiff, its unmistakable IMO. But, I just cant shake RR's comment as he has more experience in this then all of us I imagine. So, I'ma stay cautious when transferring and isolate them away from my normal work area just in case.
