WTF is with Cartoons these days???
    #15659436 - 01/13/12 08:36 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I know this sounds shitty but im serious, i havent watched kids cartoons for years and I was at a friends house and his kid was watching Cartoon Network or something similar and after we came in from smoking a bowl (me and friend) I start watching the tv and holy shit, cartoons today are FUCKED UP! I asked my friend "Do you really let him watch this shit? this reminds me of a fucked up acid trip or something." he kinda laughed it off and agreed that the cartoons are weird but writes it off as "im not gunna be a nazi, he likes it"
we sat and shot the shit for another 25 minutes and the show Chowder came on (I remember the name because i specifically wrote it down)
Watching this show for less than 90 seconds i basically yelled at my buddy who was in the kitchen "Dude! These fuckers are Tripping! These cartoon writers are APE SHIT!"
And i was serious, the pattern on the characters clothes moves whenever they move, like its a cutout and they're running against a fractal background. I was only high and started trippin out haha.
After leaving my buddies house i vowed that If i had kids i would never let them watch the kind of shit they play as cartoons today.

Chowder is trippy as fuck, very psychedelic in my opinion too. Cartoon Network has some very trippy shows. I think the writers of some of these shows know exactly the kind of audience they are catering to. And the shit that plays on adult swim late at night is so trippy!!! The little 10-15 second adult swim "bumps" really trip me out.

The art style doesn't get me. I appreciate it. It's the fact that most cartoons today make gluttony into something funny at a time where childhood obesity is a big problem.

Cartoons were trippy and disturbing ever since I was a kid when Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead and weird shit like Liquid Television came out. It's probably the same guys from back then just on different shows and networks. I like the trippy stuff but not when I'm actually tripping....... that shit is menacing and creepy especially Tim and Eric type shows.
I learned to never trip and watch cartoons back in high school while attempting to watch the Simpsons and getting all creeped out by Marge's groan noises.

Heh, yeah I was just thinking the same thing. Is that a kids cartoon? I'm guessing kids wouldn't ever understand it or get it anyways but didn't think I'd ever see that mentioned in a cartoon of all things.

It's called Adventure Time

i actually heard something on NPR the other week about this . . .
there was a study done on children who watch these kinds of cartoons and found that kids who watch spongebob scored lower on aptitude tests as opposed to kids who watched less . . um, disruptive (?) programming.
short story is that it wasn't the content of the cartoons that was interfering with their ability to continue trains of thought, but it was the high pace of switching from scene to scene to scene to thought from scene to blah blah blah  that kept them from being able to keep focus . .
there are of course . . . caveats

http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2011/09/12/140401099/spongebob-may-be-too-speedy-for-preschool-brains

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/09/12/140398115/sorry-what-did-you-say-spongebob-is-bad-for-kids-brains

and honestly, i've seen some of the old cartoons we used to watch more recently and was kind of taken with how violent they are. >shrug<
things have different meanings and are interpreted differently by younger more flexible brains that haven't gone through the paces we've been schooled in.

come on guys, don't be daft.

young humans are essentially deranged retards, that's why television catered to them is just as stupid.

i'm sure the cartoons we watched as infants were just as silly.  and yes, these cartoons ARE for toddlers and infants.

once children are old enough to follow a basic plot, most of them move on to scooby doo, tom and jerry etc.

"violent" idk about that.

Children enjoy physical comedy more than other demographics.

I still don't see the problem, they are just catering their product for their target audience.

that's kind of what i'm saying, you call it physical comedy, and i call it surprisingly violent . .
i said things have different meanings to younger and older brains . . maybe i've stepped on enough rakes and had things smack me upside the head enough times that it's just not funny anymore  >shrugs<
i didn't say it was brainrot and rubbish that should be banned, i was just agreeing that cartoons seem fucked up -Now-

I don't think they are any 'worse' for the kids, per se, than the shit I grew up with; at least, not in that classical desensitization sense you're referring to.

Dunno about you dudes, but I grew up with shit like this:

You just don't see stuff like that anymore.. I mean, my mom read me the fucking BOOK when I was like 6.

Okay, but I watch the new cartoons and I think 'this shit is fucking STUPID'.  Is it stupider than the g.i.joe bullshit I grew up with? I dunno.. Remember the Nazi Donald duck episode?

No shit! I mean, I remember WATCHING that shit.. Didn't think much of it, if memory servers..

I don't know, sir.. Everthing seems fucking dumb and annoying these days, but then, isn't that what our parents used to say too?

Fuck.. I turned out okay? Didn't I? Wait.. What was I talking about?

WOW . . lol, no i definitely missed both of those.
i do remember seeing a different one with donald or popeye about ww2 but that was like, in my 20's on youtube.
i wholly agree that just about everything is fucking stoopid and annoying now. i personally favor instructional programming and can't find anything that isn't crapped up with product placement and vapid brain bleached california style presentation . . ratings ratings ratings ( always at the expense of content )
my girl and i are starting a collection of studio ghibli and some other classics that we can have as 'stock' for our kids. .. Not to sound like i wanna give them fluff, but those stories have plot, excellent artwork and LOADS of imagination.
a lot of the things i see recently just look like loosely veiled experiments in insanity.
and i'm pretty sure i turned out ok too lol, at least it helps me sleep at night.

I don't think it's the content of the shows that's harmful. I agree with something that was mentioned earlier, it's the rapId change of scenes; although I do believe the psychotic attitude of the characters does get (for lack of better words) "absorbed" by the adolescent mind.

Just look at the avarege middle class 5 year old. Their like little rerarded copies of the shows they watch. Many of these show just promote a simpleton antagonist and has all the classis symptoms of ADD and were surprised that kids can't pay attention at school.

Our children look up to Spongbob! These are dangerous times friends... Dangerous times.

Why the fuck would you stop your kids from watching Chowder? That show is harmless. Silly as fuck.

You're deranged.

why am i deranged? because if i choose to have children i dont want their free time to be consisted of pointless stupidity. I may have over exaggerated but i am far from deranged. Chowder is fucking deranged, so put that in your pipe and smoke it :trippinballs:

I grew up with spongebob and that was about it. but the really older episodes.

I remember one time when I was fryin on shrooms I was channel surfing and spongebob came on and it was that part where patrick goes "my mind is an enigma" or some shit and then it just shows a picture in his head of a milk carton falling over. I couldn't stop laughin.

ADVENTURE TIME

and

FLAPJACK

pure awesome. me and my gf are huge fans and in almost every episode we see hidden messages about drugs or stuff and have fun finding new clues. its like we talk in adventure time quotes ("mathematical!") etc.

This ones pretty eerie, but i actually like it.

I remember watching this quite a while ago.
I like it to, it seems like something from the middle of a movie
and i'm curious to see if there is more.
On the subject of modern cartoons though,
i think most of them are meant to ironically obnoxious
like i couldn't stand a lot of cartoons like 'courage the cowardly dog' or 'ren and stimpy' when i was young of enough to watch them.
But now that i'm older it's actually more appealing.
I wonder what adventure time would be like as a adult swim show.

It must be an awesome job being a voice talent. You get up in the morning, shower, shave, breakfast, go to work and once there talk and sing in zany voices and trying to make the most lulz out of a script :yesnod:
