Are incubators necessary?
    #1565087 - 05/21/03 06:15 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

The temps in my home vary from 65-80
If they are not necessary how much longer will 1/2 pint jars take to colonize?

Afoaf innoculated 4 1/2 pint jars and let them sit in approx 70F temps for 8 days with absolutely no sign... he placed them in an 83-87 variable incubator and saw massive growth within 24-48 hours... it makes all the difference... plus, the most important thing, the longer they take to colonize, the more of a chance contams have to take over

A friend made some jars and left one out of the chamber 13 days later ones that have had a steady 86.6 degree temp are fully colonized as for the one out of the chamber that was still kept dark maybe 25 percent done give them the extra love and they will return it.

If you can't afford an incubator right now, you might try putting the jars on top of your water heater. It worked very well for me.

the water heater is a great idea. but my water heater is outside under a patio in my back yard. is there going to be too much light out there? should I cover the jars up with a dark T- shirt or something? Also, at what temp does it become too warm? above 90?

The word "your" is possessive as in "It is your mushroom". Consider using "you're", a contraction meaning "you are" as in "You're pretty entertaining...".

I was thinking, inocculate, substrait, vermiculite, abort, and several others were more frequently mis-spelled...I say this defiantly....because I'm sure....ir did I mean deffinatly..
