Problem with PE grow.
    #15654636 - 01/12/12 10:50 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I will give you a visual representation of this. the first cake i birthed roughly 12 days ago, started to produce fruits not too long ago... i popped my head in this morning to check on them and mist/fan/turn on the cfl 6500k light, and low and behold, the pin i had seen growing had opened the veil, it was the smallest one i've seen, only 2-4 cm long, and its cap was open. sterile as it was, and i've been reading that pe doesn't like to drop spores which is fine i guess.... there are two other babies on this cake and both are about an inch long, one of which has still yet to open the cap, but it looks like it's about to... the stems are meaty as hell, and i just ate two of the three. :sunny:

i did not dunk any of these cakes all the way to the bottom of a container, but i at least had them submerged underneath the lid for 24 hours at room temp.... is this why i'm only getting little mushrooms? how should i get the cakes to the bottom?

if they are opening then there is an unknown variable present for the cause...ie.. contame, lack of water or fresh air. I personally have found that cakes and PE do not go well together. They never seemed to get to full size.

Using MS for PE in my experience, if not grown on bulk substrate results is little fruits.

This pic was from PE grown on cased rye. Notice the size compared to the chap stick.

maaaaaaan don't tell me that! lol

Nothing came out contam'd on the outside of any of the cakes... though i know you can get stuff on the inside.

I will leave the contam thing for last, but i mist and fan all the time 5+ a day for fanning, and misting really heavily about 2 or three. lights are 12 on 12 off.

Just ate the third baby and discovered a fourth baby on the bottom, veil is open. anyway.

PE is known for mutation, no? I'm thinking of redunking the right way for at least 12 hours. not sure how i'm going to get them to stay at the bottom

What is needed from RR?  Your question has been answered. Genetics vary with MS. Try moving to bulk next time.

I'm asking if there is anyway to save this now....

would it be possible to spawn these brf to a tub or are we talking about me just having the wrong substrate?

Umeltin, I will try my best to give it more, but i'm giving it a lot as it is, even with my schedule and all.

You're better off finishing what's already started. You don't want to spawn cakes that have already flushed. Next go around I would start it with spawning to bulk in mind.

But don't PE act funny on the first flush anyway? that, coupled with improper dunking... I think I'm answering my own question here. I'm going to the store today to pick up something that will hold the cakes down..

If you have agar and plates. Clone one of the fruits and start with a known fruiting strain. Then you will have more material to start with than you can use.

Right, I haven't tried dunking them again, the mycelium is still... growing. hypothetical question: if i were to break these cakes up, and case them... would they fruit better?

I don't think you should break them up and case them. Just use this as a learning experience. Maybe you should look into grain/bulk for next grow? Do you own a pressure cooker? It's a lot easier than you'd think. I know many who never touched cakes and went straight to monotubs, and were never happier.

Good luck amigo. Don't get discouraged. Sometimes the fruit of the gods will cock tease you before they put out.

UPDATE. i started misting less, actually i think it was more like watering... think the cakes were over-saturated. the cakes are doing way better and actually making big mushiez now. i let it go for a day, misted extremely lightly, and now the mycelium is actually starting poof up, and you can see the little rhyzomorphic strands reaching out. what's on my cake has already surpassed the other tiny ones that i have eaten.
