Causality and Anecdotes
    #1565407 - 05/21/03 10:21 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Am reading a book by Debbie Ford called "The Dark Side of the Light-Chasers". (Yup - must keep up-to-date on New Age pablum!) The thrust of the book is about accepting your dark side (Go Star Wars!) such as the fact that we, at times, are all thieves, violent, selfish, etc.

In one chapter, Debbie, a white woman, confronts her hidden racism as on the surface she was all about equality. After she makes peace with it, the next day a black woman in a seminar where Debbie was the facilitator, who had previously been abusive, suddenly became quite sweet and thus her point was made.

Now Debbie's premise may be valid, however, the linking of these two events is illogical and it is impossible to draw ANY valid conclusion from this "coincidence" of attitude shifts.

It is all relative to Debbies perspective. She had a fear of other races for whatever reason. Once she gained acceptance and dealt with her taught fear, she was able to see the 'black woman' in a different light.

Therefore the sentence should read "..who had previously seemed abusive to debbie , suddenly became quite sweet and thus her point was made."

There was no shift in the 'black woman's' attitude, only the way that debbie percieved her!

Perception and interpretation are the bane of all investigation, empirical and otherwise. It is the reason scientists have been wrong about many things.

But perception and interpretation is what the Universe is all about...

Why does everyone insist on trying to make Reality black and white? Right and wrong? Hah. Reality is all about the perception, the interpretation of it. Only if we were omnipresent could we perceive all of Reality at once, and as long as we are limited to the constrains of our bodies and egos we are NOT, so of course science is going to be wrong. Everything man-made is going to be wrong. YOU CAN'T KNOW THE WHOLE THING WHEN YOU ARE STILL JUST A PIECE.
