power
    #1565308 - 05/21/03 11:43 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

what are your thoughts on power? does it corrupt? does it put ordinary people in positions where they can do extrodinary things?

my belief:
all power is corrupt. whether the power is thought to be used in a good or bad way... it only bridges a gap between humans and leads to the stiflying of ideas and purpose. it is especially dangerous in hierachy's where power is sought after. i believe when all power is relinquished, the human race will find itself in a state of peace. hitler was powerful and believed he was doing the right thing. bush is powerful and believed he was doing the right thing. power leads people to believe their actions are for the greater good, but are they really?

power corrupts those who seek it.

Exactly.

Recently I was made 2nd Vice President of one of my state's nature clubs. I was offered the position for my work in botany and mycology.

You will find that those who seek power have some "agenda" they wish to fulfill. Which is a nice way of saying they want to do something to someone and need power to do it.

I find moderating to be a big pain in the ass for the most part. I moderate 6 forums here at the Shroomery and takes a lot of effort on my part to keep the ship afloat, with the most excellent help of my other moderators, of course.

I hate locking threads. I hate editing posts and deleting them. The only satisfaction I get is when the forum runs smoothly and we get those GREAT discussions where we all learn something. If it weren't for that I would give it up in a New York minute.

Thanks for hitting the nail on the head.

As a correlary notice how politicians almost always seek power. What does that say about them?

If you really want to get to know someone's true character, put them in a positon of power.

But also, if one is not ready to accept power, it soon becomes a downward spiral.

Do you think this is so? I think that power can change people's character on a subconscious level. It also can make people less understanding of others' views, because they now have the power. It is a different subject if these people are power seekers, in that case, I think you are right.

I find if you truly want to test one's character you should share a bowl of shrimp with them.

I also find that those who have never held a position of great power lack the vantage point to speak intelligently about it.

Power is not in-and-of-itself corrupt. People with power can yield that power however they choose. Some use it for evil, and some use it for good. Whether power is corrupt or not depends on whether the person who yields the power is corrupt. Just my thoughts....

Peace,

I dont think it leads them to believe they're doing the right thing as much as it gives them the power to make their ideas reality which can be bad. We all have opinions about different issues, the type of 'agree to disagree' things. Its ok but when you cancel out one side of an issue someones gonna get hurt. You think your side is right but so do they...

You dont see a persons true face under power. Power corrupts, the more power more corruption. Very few people can handle large amounts of power w/o abusing it, I use I couldn't, maybe for awhile but the line slowly moves. Think about the Twilight Zone episode where that guy had the power to make anything he wants happen, its impossible, I think to not stray from good. I could do it for awhile but their are points in life when you falter and make mistakes, but they carry a big price when you have power and slip up.

I think everyone has a certian point while having power when they start to abuse their power- it depends on how much power they have. I think a Tibetian monk would have a better tolerance to corruption than your average joe.

Oh, and not that a monk would ever want power, but you see what I mean.

I agree with RebelSteve. Power is a neccesity for society to function. Some people lead, and others follow. It is up to the people to provide a system in which no one person holds too much power. Checks and balances. The problem is when the people in power try and chagne the system to give them more power, ususally under the pretense that it is in our best interests.

A revolt only happens when the enforcing power has too much power. History has shown us that.

Agreed.

But I must add, there must have been some who didn't.
