Waiting for first pins on first successful grow is killin' me.
    #15651797 - 01/11/12 07:09 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I know I need to be patient, but I just want to see something...  I'm sure you guys can relate.  The cakes seem healthy and I'm well within the timeframe for not seeing pins yet (4th day in FC), so instead I'm just going to post this thread and vent a little anxiety while I continue to wait.

I have them in a SGFC, but I have a heater in the closet with them to keep the temp above 70*.  I'm a little worried this may be affecting humidity in the SGFC.  I ordered a hygrometer today so I should know later this week what the RH is.  Temp has been about 70-75* consistently.  Misting/fanning 4 times a day.  Light is 5000k (couldn't find a 6500k) CFL on 12/12.

As you may be able to see, I wasn't able to get the verm to stick to the cakes very well after the dunk, but I did my best.

Well, the FC looks right, and the cakes look fine.

...any time now, I would say.

...but I recall, and know, that this is little solace at this stage.

Do your best to not think about the result.  Just stay on track and they
will happen.

Good luck,

JD

Looks to me from the first picture that you only have 3 inches or so of perlite. Maybe add a little bit. Maybe help a little. I have the same setup as you and I'm on day 8 with only 1 hyphal knot that I can see. My mycelium is growing through the verm layer just like yours. I'm also geting flustered not seeing any results but hopefully soon for both of us.

Thanks bro, I eyeballed the perlite depth when I added it and it does appear to be a little less than 4" in some places, I might add some more.

Good luck on yours as well!  Do you have a grow log or something somewhere?

Also, what's a hyphal knot?

Hyphal knots are tiny formations before pinning. Like little white dots and turn into pins eventually

This page describes primordia+knots with some cool photos:

Ah, I remember my first grow. I thought for sure I went wrong somewhere and then I woke up one morning and out of nowhere I saw a shitload of pins.

It's been taking me about 7 days to see pins, where more experienced members of the forum seem to get 3-4 days.

I'm on my first grow too... i picked a slow fruiter lol, almost a week and more to see the little hyphal knots... In the jars, they seemed to form around metabolites, and the 'condensation' that looked more like some gel substance. today, one out of nine cakes is starting up. just give it time i guess.

Woohoo, nice.  Not much new with mine.  A little myc starting to grow through the verm on the top, but no signs of pins.

take my advice, use this time to get your next batch going so you dont have to go through this again. i have a mono that just went into fruiting, im seeing knots so i will probably be harvesting by next weekend. but i plan to spawn another one spawned before i pull the 2nd flush, even though i should be good for a WHILE. a well consolidated substrate will pin alot faster, so getting a jump on the next grow helps net you a solid first flush and keeps you from staring at your grow praying to the shroom gods to bring you primordia. in the case of my next tub(s), they will probably pin invitro before i put them into fruiting

thats some thick verm feel like id have some trouble spotting pins on it lol. not a bad thing though from what ive read around here thick or fine verm really doesnt make much difference.

But i always tend to get excited when the myc starts eating through the verm case cause then i know the pins are usually a day or so away lol.

grats on the pins and many big flushes i wish your way.

also sillycube makes a valid point im on my 3rd grow now and i find that its a great idea that once you get one set in the chamber start getting some other jars ready for when they are done flushing and youll never have any down time just constant growth.

The wait was killing me, just on the jars colonizing, so after a couple weeks i started more, than a week later started more, and another week started more, all different "strains", now that the first ones are pinning I dont even check on my jars (was watching them intently at least 5x a day ), Now that i have pins/ mini fruits im back to staring, at pins not jars......., haven't looked at jars in awhile, hmm maybe i should do that now

While I know that it is cold comfort when waiting for
fruits, esp when getting started at cultivating, but the
best "fix" is to start the next experiment now.

...it gives you something to do while you wait.  ;0)

Good luck,

JD
