Wheat grain's germinating in bulk substrate? Any worries

I recently did 2 monotubs, 1 with straw/poo, the other the exact same with gypsum added at 5%. The one with gypsum has about 20 wheat plants popping up. Is there anything to worry about. I imagine not right

Wait, you didn't PC the grains? How were the grains prepped?

I'm also interested in the answer to this question. I had a tub that went sour on me (for a reason yet to be determined...) which sprouted a baby plant out of no where, and I had no idea what the hell it was until I made the connection after reading your post. I was quite baffled, and now I'm wondering if it was the rye berries sprouting that caused my entire tub to abort. I've never had rye sprout on me, but I also just switched my rye vendor so that could be why I'm seeing this all of a sudden.

they were prepped properly the rr way. I've done 4 tubs and have only seen one other seed germinate.

Usually the "soak and simmer" is enough to prevent germination of grains... Usually... But a good PCing would definitely prevent this from happening...
Perhaps they are not from your grain spawn... But rather, from some foreign seeds in your bulk substrate... They often can survive a low-temp pasturization

I could see seeds surviving the pasteurization. But no way would rye remain viable through the PC cycle.

I had shit sprouting in my horse manure when I used it for bulk. I still got mushrooms, although small. I got a couple of good flushes, but just really small, so I ended up burying it in my back yard. Now Im wondering if my manure is any good or does any one know how to elminate this?

IDK but trust me on this my myco game is tight, I have a All American with a toggle valve and my PC'ing gets up to 25PSI usually for a little while when i PC my grains. As for pasteurization I've got that down as well. My pasteurization starts at about 160F after everything is added and ends up at about 145F after 90 minutes, the lowest its ever gotten is 138F (+-1.5F) for only about 15 minutes. IDK if its rye sprouting but something is, and yes it looks pretty baddass. I guess i should add its been about a week since spawning and the top is about 90% covered with mycelium. Oh, and this is my fifth (hopefully) successful tub and I've seen about 4 sprouts before but never so many in one tub.

Oh man...I wasn't doubting your cultivation experience/technique. Just trying to point to where these sprouts could be coming from.

I'm sure the seeds that are sprouting are wheat seeds from improper pasteurization of the straw. There's no way autoclaved and colonized rye berries are sprouting. RR

...and there it is: RR approved!
Adding plants to a grow is a relatively advanced aspect of this hobby.
Have you been watching psyloman's (sp?) bonsai azure grow? Those fruits are hugging the grass, or so it seems.
Good luck,

Ive done 5 tubs this same way and never had a tub contaminate so IDK if you would call that improper pasteurization or not, I'm doing your method to the the T besides the fact that i premix my straw and poo and put it in pillow cases after a 24 hour soak (which is really messy), and i monitor my temps and there always spot on, and i go a full 90 minutes. FYI this is the only tub I've added gypsum to. Do u see any issues? irrespective of the "improper pasteurization."

So far so good, I have the tubs sealed and I'm about to open them up so ill gets some pics then. The tub looks really healthy but I'm afraid the wheat is going to interfere with fruiting somehow, I think I'm gonna pluck them all so because I know some fruits are bound to bump into them and I don't want any interference, not sure if it would cause the fruits to abort or not...So yeah ill get some pics up soon

As long as there is no foreign mold or too much bacteria the cube mycelium should be able to hold its own. You may get a reduced second flush as the sprouts are also consuming nutrients from your substrate. That said this does still indicate either incomplete sterilization of your grains or foreign seeds present in bulk substrate. If the sprouts are from your grain spawn it indicates that the embryo in the center of the seed was not killed, and thus other more hearty organisms, such as bacterial endospores, or possibly even foreign mold spores could have survived. You may need to increase your PC time in the future to lessen the chance of contamination.

Im using a AA 921 and it gets up to 25psi every run, so these sprouts must be wheat. But I'm telling you guys my pasteurization is good, I monitor it and have a good routine. I think these seeds are tougher than were giving them credit for!
