Pot crop found in Troy home

JOHN MICHALAK May 20, 2003

TROY - By any measure, Saturday's drug bust at a Troy home on East Wattles was substantial.
Police removed about 250 marijuana plants in various stages of growth from several rooms at the home, along with a large number of plant-growing lights and a carbon dioxide generator, plus numerous properties like scales, and cultivators associated with the "marijuana business," Zavislak said.

"The value of the marijuana is in excess of $100,000," Troy Police Lt. Steve Zavislak added. "The house is leased to an individual. We have spoken to the owner who indicated he didn't know about this."

Zavislak said no one has been charged in connection with the bust. However, Zavislak said an investigation is ongoing and includes "an individual who is a person of interest."

The house has been leased to the same person for about three years, Zavislak said.

Events leading to the bust started about 9:45 p.m. Friday after a motorist passed the house on Wattles near Raintree Drive, where he saw sparks coming from an electrical feed box outside and a glow in an upper part of the house.

Firefighters were called and confirmed a fire had started at the electrical box.

Because no one was home, firefighters forced their way in through the front door but were blocked by an electrical wire and a living room full of marijuana plants, Zavislak said.

Firefighters called police, who obtained a search warrant and entered the house about 8 a.m. Saturday, Zavislak said. The person renting the house never showed up, possibly because of the activity around the dwelling.

Besides the bust and fire, Zavislak said DTE Energy officials determined the electrical feed into the house was connected illegally. Electricity going into the house was unmetered and stolen, Zavislak said.

"It wasn't done by Edison," Zavislak said. "We were advised that as a result of the electrical connection, the house was a fire hazard. It was disconnected."

Police on Monday spent much of the day doing an inventory of confiscated items in the Troy police parking lot, Zavislak said.

"There were so many plants that they had to be removed from buckets and placed in 55 gallon drums for storage," Zavislak said. "The marijuana was in various rooms. The house was full of them. Many of plants were four or five feet high.

"We have to assume he was supplying marijuana to different individuals. When you're looking at 250 plants, plus the elaborate nature of the grow lamps, it either was an on-going operation or to become one."

Zavislak said police canvassed the area and learned the tenant was seen at the house in the early evening hours Friday.

shitty way to get busted

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.
