Pf tek is the easiest, hence why it's recommended for beginners. The dry verm layer is your defense against airborn contams, the tin foil will only suffocate the cakes. Flipping is something that people do if their cakes just aren't getting to the bottom and it's going unusually slow to get there. I don't know who told you to leave tin foil wrapped around the top to avoid contams, but that's false information. The dry verm layer is enough. If you still have contams even with the dry verm layer then you went wrong elsewhere.

I was in the same boat when I flipped my jars. I was really impatient. But as I threw my hands up, pins began to appear. I then went out of town for a few days for Christmas, and when I came back, all the jars were packed with pins wrapped around the cakes.
So I have harvested them, and find myself in that slow boat again. I dunked the cakes a couple nights ago that did not come apart when I took them out of their jars, and now I am feeling like you, wondering what's going on. Try to avoid looking at the jars for a couple or three days.

That's the next logical step to go dude, once you have pf tek under your, belt, it's time to step it up a notch with some bulkage.

Can you clarify bulk? What would be the difference between PF Tek and bulk? I admit, I'm too lazy and tired to search for bulk at the moment

PC FTW = Pressure Cooker, For The Win.
A PC works great for PF Tek too.

Jw6457 said:It just seems like half of people say to flip them if they seem to not be colonizing the bottom as well as take tinfoil off after inoculation if they have a dry verm barrier. Then there is the other half who say dont flip the jars or take the tinfoil off as you will get contams.
If you have fancy self sealing inoculation ports with tyvek/other filter then it is ok to flip as you don't need a dry verm layer.
Verm layer is your filter, all contams will sit closely to the top of the dry verm layer if shaken/flipped there's a possibility that the contam(s) will reach your substrate. It's only a possibility, still a chance that it's trapped some where in the verm layer, I believe.
Mycelium need the gas exchange so if it's sealed with the foil it can't exchange the gas. heh..
I dropped one of my jars a good 6 ft and it fell and rolled heh.. Don't see any contams yet.

Don't worry about it man. Everyone was a first time grower once. Read as much as you can and try and understand the reasons why things are done they way they are done (gas exchange, alfoil, etc).
Good luck, it sounds like you are pretty close to success

Yesterday I complained about a grow that had come to a screeching halt. Today there is no screeching, just a lot of pins waking up. Patience, patience, patience.

serious question: is that normal? even if you waited a week after it was fully colonized? I'm colonizing my first jars right now and i would hate for the the cakes to come apart after waiting patiently for them to be fully colonized?
