casing - pinheads forming on the sides... confused.
    #1564078 - 05/20/03 08:43 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

sorry, i tried to get pics for this. its too dark in here for the webcam. anyway, a treefrog cased 2 1/2 pint jars of thailand koh-samui about... 2 weeks ago or so... bottom layer 50-50 of verm. and potting soil, then the crused up mycelium, and then the top layer is about 3 in. of just potting soil that was moistened to field capacity (so it molds and holds its shape but no water drips out) this was all placed into a see through plastic shoebox sized case. problem being this method is kinda different compared to things froggie's read here, but froggie found this method before he knew this place even existed. so far, its worked. there is mycelium showing correctly on the surface and the container is now in a fruiting chamber, a day after putting it in there pins had formed. they are everywhere except for the surface, he can see them all over the place through the sides of the container it was put in. most are just really small, but there are two that are fairly large froggie supposes... close to a centimeter. they are right next to each other... the side they are forming on is pushing away from the sides of the container, however all the other sides of the casing are in the same place. im guessing they are forming on the sides because he used a see through container to case the cakes in... thats what he was told to do until he found the shroomery. is this normal? can the pins forming in this fully mature... or since they are forming on the sides are they shot? this is froggie's first time actually seeing pins and my first attempt at growing, hes just kinda lost as to whats going on with the pins and if they have a chance, because as far as he know the pins are supposed to form on the top of a casing. any help would be very appreciated. thanks.

sounds like overlay, the top has matted down and wont fruit, has pulled away from the sides alittle too probably, if that is the case then it prolly woulda pinned of the sides ne way, but having a clear container furthered that, they can mature but most of them probly wont, junebug had overlay on his first casing and grew one monster that came from the corner, grew upwards then started leaning and arched over so that when it was fully mature it was touchin the opposite corner of the container, and then a few medium small ones, most of them up against the side(or atleast a good many) will most likely abort though
